    Dear Friends

The gist of our last issue was a PracticalGuide to Family Devotions. We thankGod that not one but two churcheshave found it useful and relevant they

have since gotten in touch and askedfor permission to reproduce the entirearticle for their congregation!

We are most delighted to be a blessing to both RiverLifeChurch and Christ Methodist Church. After all, our mission isall about supporting parents, pastors and educators in theirendeavours to transform lives, and we thank God that He isusing our newsletter to fulll that mandate.

In this issue, we look at a familiar topic through fresh eyes:Prayer. Prayer is not just a spiritual discipline that is essentialfor our spiritual growth, but also a life skill that we asparents, pastors and educators must equip our children with if we are truly committed to give them a head start in life.

To develop their abilities and potential, we equip our childrenwith so many skills academic, musical and sports, just toname a few but few will be as important as the life skill ofprayer. How are you equipping the children in your family, your church and ministry with this critical life skill?

No matter how you are doing it, you and I can do better!

Hence I invite you to join us at the Children in Prayerconference on April 9 & 10 to gain new ideas and a freshimpetus. Together, lets build a 'prayer-full' generation!

As SU moves forward into all that God has for us, we areexpanding our team. We are calling for more full-timeworkers to co-labour with us in His harvest eld. Would youpray to the Lord of the harvest to bring us more workers? Ormaybe you feel led to explore ministry, service or internshipopportunities with us. Come talk to us. Thank you for beingpartners with us in the work of God!

Today, sending our children to school to learnthe basics is just a beginning. We want the bestfor our children, so we make sure we do all we

can for them. We teach our children to ride bikes, skate, swim, and ski. You may offer your children themusical arts: piano, violin, voice lessons, guitar, and,if they must, drums. Also, if you or your children areso inclined, there is dance, ballet and gymnastics. Youcan enroll your children in acting, stage, performanceclasses, and even modeling. And afterward you cannd them an agent.

As parents, we hire tutors for extra help, take ourchildren to second-language schools after theirregular schooling, and enroll them in weekendcourses. We dont do this becauseour children are behind; we wantto help them get ahead.

It may seem funny to see it alllisted like this, yet the time spentdriving, enrolling children inlessons, attending concerts, practices, games, recitals, and auditions is serious, valuable time. We want our

children to develop fully their talents, abilities, and character . We can buy books that will helpus teach our children manners, values, virtues, andassertiveness. There are books to teach them howto handle nances, get better grades, discover theirpersonality types, learn business basics, conquer publicspeaking, and be politicians. (Well, I havent seen thatone yet, but Im sure it wont be long.)

So, why do we do it? Because we love our childrenand want the best for them. This is as it should be.

Giving the Very Best: PrayerAs important as all these skills and experiencesare, there is something far more important

something that is foundational forall of life, something that will trulyequip our children for whatever theirfutures hold. This something is prayer.

communicate with the One who is their Creator,Father, Teacher, and Guide the One who loves them

    more than we can imagine.

Jesus once scolded the religious leaders because eventhough they were careful to give exactly 10 percentof their spices to the temple, they were not treatingpeople very well. He wasnt saying they shouldnt givea portion of their spices to God; He was drawing acontrast that highlighted their lack of proper focus. In a similar way, all these things we teach our childrenare important, and the activities and tasks can betterprepare them for life, but, in comparison to theimportance and benet of teaching our children topray, they are like giving 10 percent of our spices.

Teaching our children to pray will put them in

touch with the Father who not only wants thebest for them but who knows what that best isand has the power and resources to deliver . Jesuscompared our ability to give to our children to Godsability when He said, If you then, though you areevil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give goodgifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11).

A recent Gallup survey published in Parenting magazine revealed that about 65 percent of parentspray with their children before bed and at mealtimes. This suggests that as parents we have a heart for prayerand acknowledge prayers importance. But, althoughbedtime and mealtime are great places to start, teaching a child to pray must go beyond those times.

Every parent wants to see the success and promotionof their children. As an audience, we constantlyrejoice over Cinderella stories. The low, humble butbeautiful, and often sweet-spirited child is whiskedaway from trouble in Plainsville and given a place

    Teach Them to Pray!

among royalty. Childhood stories from Rumpelstiltskin to The Prince and the Pauper to Disneys recent

adaptations of Beauty and the Beast , The LittleMermaid , and Aladdin all carry this familiar theme.

This is closer to reality than you might think for wehave an invitation from the King of all kings for ourchildren to go to heaven the ultimate palace. Hereall can receive status as part of the royal family ofGod. But this invitation to heaven is not simply toattend. Its an invitation to sit, talk with, andget to know the One who is all-powerful andin charge of everything . Its an invitation for ourchildren to become permanent members of thatfamily and enjoy its benets. And membership withits benets begins before their arrival in heaven; itbegins right here on earth.

Gods offer to all children and adults to enter Hiskingdom includes knowing and experiencing Godspresence. When we teach our children not only to praybut to have prayer as part of the foundation of theirlives and who they are, we give them the ultimategifts, benets, and blessings that life has to offer:an audience with and the friendship of God.

Unlocking the SecretIf I said to you, I have the secret thatwill help you raise children who areat peace inside, are always growingpersonally, are courageous, have a strongcharacter, stay out of trouble, and steer clearof evil, would you want to know that secret?

If this secret also gave your children a solid senseof direction and purpose, and would make them

honoured and thought highly of by their friendsand peers, would you want to know it?

The secret is simple: Teach them to pray.

Reflections What are some aspirations you have for your children? How can teaching

them about prayer help them in their life endeavours? What role does prayer play in your family life? What are some things

such as a busy schedule, misplaced priorities, or nancial concerns thatget in the way of your familys prayer life? Consider ways in which youcan give prayer a more central role in your familys life.

Take time to set these things before God in prayer and ask Him tohelp you incorporate more time for prayer into your personal andfamily routine.

Ask God to help you give your children the best by makingspiritual teaching and training a priority in your home.

Among the guests were pastors of various partnering churches as wellas those who wanted to know more about SUs ministry. The atmospherewas decidedly light as key volunteers who had served at the recentcamps traded anecdotes and caught up excitedly with one another.

S Uk id !When I was in primary school, I attended Sundayschool regularly but I dont think I really understoodthe teachings. My rst real encounter with Jesuswas at the Scripture Union Youth Camp in 1998 .

At the camp, I was put in a small group with fantasticleaders who took care of me. During the worship,I felt a sense of peace which I had never

experienced before . I started to cry and the campnurse, Sister Fong Lin, asked me if I wanted to acceptJesus into my life, to be my friend and comforterforever. I answered Yes!, and my life was never thesame again.

During the next few years, I took baby steps inmy Christian faith as my parents did not approveof me attending church. Time and again, I driftedaway from God and then came back again. Thanks

to Scripture Union and to my church The SalvationArmy (Changi Corps), I did not drift away fromGod completely. I made it a point to attend theScripture Union Youth Camp every year, andthis really helped me stay connected to Godand to His people .

You could say that I spent my growing up yearswith the folks in Scripture Union. This helped meto mature spiritually and mentally. Uncle David hasplayed a big part in my life. He is like a father to me,guiding me and praying along with me. His energyand love for God have been a great inspiration!

I was given many opportunities toserve God, even when I felt I was not

up to it. After my O levels, I was given the opportunityto serve as an Associate Ministry Assistant withScripture Union for six months. This was a milestonein my journey. I was a camp leader at Scripture UnionsPrimary Age Camp, and an SU Trek Leader for variouschurch camps. We would run the childrens programme

while the adults have their own church campprogramme.

I learnt a lot from Scripture Union Bibleteachings, life skills, ministry skills, working attitudes, and interpersonal skills. This is also where I have metand made plenty of good friends.

Just last month, I served as the camp commandant inScripture Union Primary Age Camp. It really feels like I

have come full circle. Then an unsaved youth, nowa camp commandant . So much has changed over thelast 11 years! God has done so much in my life. I havebeen so blessed.

Because of my own experience, I want very much toimpact the lives of the younger ones, who remind meof how I was back in my school days. Besides serving inScripture Union, I have started to serve in the childrensministry of my church. I love to see the childrenworshipping and presenting their prayers to Jesus withinnocent hearts. Because of what God has done in mylife, I want to impact more young lives for Jesus!

Power Point : Prayer changes thingsBible Passage : James 5:13-19Memory Verse : James 5:16 The prayer of a righteous

    man is powerful and effective.

Introduction1. Divide the children into groups of 8 (not more

than 10).2. This is a group effort and everyone is required

to contribute.3. God says He will grant your group 10 prayer

LessonUse the memory verse to startoff the lesson. As Christians, our most powerful weapon

is prayer. We all know that prayeris talking with God. Prayer opens

the way for Gods power to beshown in our lives.

However we must confessour sins to God before wepray. When we have sins in

our lives, He does not hear our prayer.Read Psalm 66:18.

Invite a child from each groupto present their prayer requests.Acknowledge and encourage

    their group efforts.

Since each group has given ustheir 10 great prayer requests, let us learn how we can

    present these requests to God.

Using the A4-sized paper,we will draw prayer ngers.
