Genre Traits

Semantic & Syntactic

SEMANTICThis is concerned with the conventions of the genre that communicate to the audience such as characters, locations, props, music, shooting styles and other Signifiers.

For horror, isolated places, low key lighting, blood, knives, dark clothing and things along those lines would be included so that it can effect the audience and make the genre more believable.

SYNTACTICThis is more to do with the relations between the elements and the structure of narratives in genre such as; in a romantic comedy the two lovers would probably start by hating each other but end up falling in love.

In horror, the narrative structure would be things such as a vulnerable ‘final’ girl, an isolated house intruded or a group of teenagers travelling etc.
