CREATE IT Summer School
17, 18, 19 and 23 July 2012
About The British Music
Experience
Our purpose is to advance the education and appreciation of the art,
history and science of music in Britain through our unrivalled collection and full programme of public and educational
workshops, lectures, master-classes
and concerts.
The British Music Experience enables visitors to trace musical trends through the decades, learn about music's influence on art, fashion and politics and allows visitors to download music from
the British Music Experience archive.
For the genuine musical experience,
members of the public can visit the Gibson Interactive Studio, a fully integrated space within the British Music Experience where they can play various Gibson guitars, Slingerland Drums, pianos, mixing desks and have
a go on in the Sennheiser Vocal Booth.
The British Music Experience uses Radio-frequency identification (RFID)
technology throughout the museum.
Traditional tickets are replaced by a Smarticket which allows visitors to activate the interactive elements of the museum and also to register further interest in specific British Music Experience features. Visitors can then
visit www.britishmusicexperience. com to discover more about the parts of the museum they want to learn
more about.
The British Music Experience is a registered not-for-profit charity.
Registered Charity No. 1125752.

The University of Greenwich is very excited to be partnering the British Music Experience - Britain's interactive museum of rock and pop music housed within The O2, to give students an insight into the world's most popular venue and access to an amazing range of resources including their state-of-the-art

You will find an overview of each strand on subsequent pages. You should apply for the strand that interests you and is relevant to the subjects you are currently studying or
are considering studying in the future. Activities replicate the university experience and will be attended by
about 60 people from local schools and colleges, so you will get to meet other people and make some new friends too!
Who should apply?
We are offering this opportunity to young people who have the potential to go on to higher education (HE) and are from Year 12 or further
education colleges in the South
East London region.
How much does it cost?
The summer school is funded by the University of Greenwich and it is
completely free to participants. We
provide lunch and refreshments on
each day.
How do I apply?
The summer school application form is available from your school or college. It
must be completed and signed by your parent/carer before being passed to your teacher/tutor in school or college. Completed applications should reach the summer schools co-ordinator by the
closing date of 31 March 2012.
Applications received after this date will only be considered if there are still
places available.
Events management
This strand is for anyone interested in the fast growing field of events management. During the three days you will develop and stage a live event
that showcases the music production and videos produced by the other
summer school strands.
The event will take place at the British Music Experience at The O2
and will feature a live performance,
several video screenings, a tour of
the facilities, VIP guests and food
and drink. You will be responsible for all areas of the event, and to help with this, you will spend three days
working through the processes and
gaining a clear understanding of the
basic stages of events
management: creative concept development (what are you going to do and why); pre-production stages (including guest management, marketing,
venue selection, and programme
development); production
(audio- visual (AV), staging,
themeing, entertainment, stakeholder
In this case, the client is the British Music Experience at The O2. They are putting on an event (that students
on the event management strand will
co-ordinate) and those on the music
technology strand will be responsible for providing music for the event, both in original recordings put together over the three days and from
remixing music from external bands.
All the content will be introduced at the event, and you can work with the
students in the other strands to make
sure that your music is showcased in
the best way possible.
Video production
This strand is a practical introduction to film and TV production. You will
start by learning about the various
stages in the production process. Then, after gaining some basic skills in planning, camera operation and editing you will work as part of a team to plan, shoot, and edit a
short film. As this work forms part of the event
The summer school programme will take place on the university's Greenwich Campus and will include
trips to the British Music Experience for research. There will also be a final
showcase event for friends and family
at the British Music Experience on the
23 July 2012.
This exciting summer school is
designed for Year 12 or further education students, providing the opportunity to experience university life and to discover what it is really like to
be a university student, before making
those important future decisions.
Over the course of three days, you will experience a challenging and interactive learning experience, with an
emphasis on practical group work. In addition, you will gain new specialist skills and knowledge and improve your team-working, project planning, and communication skills. There are three 'strands' available: events
management; music technology and
video production. Depending on the
strand you choose, you will be
either producing a remixed version
of a local band's music, shooting and
editing a video or planning our
showcase event.
management, timing, registration) and
post-production (wash-ups, feedback,
public relations).
Music technology
This strand is for anyone interested in music and sound design. Over the three days you will learn essential skills in musical composition for
picture, sound recording/editing,
programming and mixing. Having covered the basics of these areas,
you will work on a variety of tasks
relating to the client brief.
for the British Music Experience, you will be expected to create a film or
video to fit in with the music work completed by the students following
the music technology strand. There will be a variety of briefs given to the
video production strand so you can experience a range of activities, from
creating videos to a set brief through
to filming live shoots.
