Some have accused calypsonians this year of not tackling many of the major issues of the day.

Indeed, one calypsonian who will feature in this year’s Pic-O-De-Crop Finals has accused some of his colleagues in one of his songs of being “too soft” and not fulfilling their role as the voice of the people.

Not so with Adonijah.The veteran calypsonian, educator

and journalist has this year touched on one of the most sensitive and emotive social issues to have occurred in Barbados in many years –– the extrajudicial killing of Selwyn “Blues” Knight.

Knight was shot and killed by a policeman on March 15, this year, while unarmed and attempting to apprehend a suspect who had broken into his home and stolen property. That property was recovered and the suspect pleaded guilty of the offence for which he had been pursued by Knight. The police officer was also charged with murder.

It was an incident that touched Adonijah deeply.

“I had planned to perform another song called Coffee Drinkers. But after “Blues” was killed, I decided to do a song on the incident. There was a lot of emotion following what happened, and out of that my song Blues evolved,” he said.

Adonijah, who collaborated with Stefan Walcott and the 1688 Orchestra on the song, has had exposure to a wide repertoire of

musical genres, including classical music, jazz and blues; so the development of the sound he wanted for Blues came rather naturally; and he played an important part in its arrangement.

Ian Alleyne plays a searing guitar in Blues during which execution Adonijah sings along most of the time.

“I have been blessed with great arrangers,” the calypsonian says. “If I sing something, they can always interpret what I want in my calypsos. They always give me back what I had in my head.”

Adonijah, who has been involved in music for more than 40 years, noted that the song’s experimentation with a bluesy, mournful element did not take away from calypso being palpably at its core.

The prolific writer, who once performed on percussions at the 1976 CARIFESTA in Jamaica, said this year’s Pic-O-De-Crop competition and Crop Over Festival generally had him more excited than he has been in years. And he expects this year’s final to be one of the most memorable ever.

“I really believe that fans are in for something very special this year. That is the vibe I am getting,” he said, adding that the accompaniment of the Festival Band was of the highest quality and had engendered much confidence in the calypsonians.

Adonijah will be performing The Marching Song in the final as well; and judging from the overwhelming response he received

at the Semi-Finals, this should be a hit with fans come Saturday night at Kensington Oval. He gave some background to the melodic song.

“The idea for the song hit me last year. I sang it to Serenader and he got the message even before I got to the catchword following the left, right, left, right. He actually interjected with the now.

“Initially it was an anonymous person speaking to [Prime Minister] Freundel [Stuart], but then I decided to have that person being [Opposition Leader] Mia [Mottley],” he said, adding it was arranged by Roger Gittens.

Adonijah’s best showing in the Pic-O-De-Crop competition was

his second place in 1985, when he performed the classic Woman and Robot. It was a year many believed he was unfairly denied the monarchy.

And, as to his chances this year, Adonijah said he would put down his best possible performance, connect with the crowd and leave the rest to the judges.

“I have a lot of faith in the [musical] interpretations of my songs, and I will be giving it 100 per cent on Saturday. I want to give those at Kensington Oval an experience they have not had since Lawrence Rowe made 302 there back in 1974,” he said. wadegibbons@barbadostoday.

Don’t think for one minute reigning double calypso monarch Ian Webster will be giving anything short of his best come Saturday at the Pic-O-De-Crop Finals.

His voice has held up well all season; Party Monarch and Sweet Soca are now behind him; and he is ready to defend his crown.

Speaking to Bajan Vibes shortly after Soca Royale on Sunday, Webster said he was prepared to perform.

“Preparations are under way. They have been under way since like two weeks ago. So hopefully everything should be in order for Saturday –– everything is in motion, and I’m pretty confident.”

Webster said he was happy and proud after his performances at Bushy Park, and was hoping to do even better come Saturday.

Will he do a triple? Will a newcomer dethrone him? Or will a veteran take the crown? All these

questions will be answered on Saturday night. Showtime is 8 p.m.

It’s Crop Over, yes; but six young ladies from St Peter are getting their bodies and minds right for their upcoming North Arise Pageant. The inaugural event, under the theme The Evolution Begins, takes place on Sunday at the hall of The Alexandra School.
