WHAT IS GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

• It is the study of soil in relation to man made structures

• A geotechnical engineer involved with the planning and supervising of underground investigations and laboratory testing.

IMPORTANCE OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Because all construction takes place on the ground.

SITE INVESTIGATION• Purpose:

– To determine the nature, thickness and variation of soil strata in

the region

– To procure soil samples for assessing the physical properties,

which will help in design and mode of construction of proposed

foundation

– To identify the seasonal variations in ground water table and their

possible effects on the soil strata met

– To determine the depth of underlying rock bed, when necessary

MACHINES USED ON SITE

Rotary rigs, generators, electric pumps, tremmy pipes, drill bits, head pans, concrete mixer, storex tank, concrete reinforcements, cement, sand, gravel.

SITE INVESTIGATION• Prior to piling it is important to know that soil investigation

had already been performed and from soil report it was proposed that the foundation for the proposed structure should be a DEEP FOUNDATION to a depth of 28m where sand is met(which has good geotechnical properties). Clay was found as depths 5 – 19m and sand Between 19 – 28m

Topography: evenVegetation: as at time of visit was mostly grasses and weedsProneness to erosion: Nil

Groundwater level: Nil

RELEVANCE OF SIWES TO AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING

A lot of things taught in class are practically and technically experienced on the field, relating to soil mechanics, farm structures, Bsic hydrology. It should also be noted that in describing soils, soil structure affects infiltration, susceptibility to erosion and ease of root penetration and seedling emergence

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Conclusion

• The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) has availed me the opportunity to correlate and justify the relationship between the theoretical and practical aspect of my profession and has exposed me to practical works involving soil tests and description and has also opened me up to interacting with senior colleagues In the field, which has exposed me to industry based skills necessary for a smooth transition from the classroom to the corporate environment.

Recommendations

The authorities of the institution should ensure that this form of educational internship programs should be made available for the preceding levels (200 and 300 Levels) during their long vacations

Federal Government should be more involved in it by ensuring student get right posting into a firm that is really concern or major in their field of study for them to have wide practical knowledge.
