Power Train844 power train components deliver dependable, reliable performance customers expect from Cat wheel dozers.

The Caterpillar 3412E HydraulicElectronic Unit Injection engine is ratedat 466 kW Net (625 hp) at 2000 rpm.HEUI fuel system and ElectronicControl Module (ECM) deliver powerand efficiency in the most demandingapplications. Electronic controlprovides many benefits:

    Automatic altitude deration

    Elevated low idle

    Cold weather starting mode

Acceleration delay on startup to reduce engine wear

    Advanced diagnostic capabilities

    Automatic control of ether aid

Complete control of injection timingwithout concern for cam profilelimitations. Complete control ofengine speed provides advantages inlower emissions, quieter operation, reduced smoke, improved hot or coldstarting, white smoke cleanup andhigh altitude operation.

Complete control of injectionduration. The HEUI system willdecrease proportionately with enginespeed but can also electronicallycontrol the oil supply pressure. Thisprovides improved engineperformance and decreased fuelconsumption.

Injection rate shaping reduces nitrousoxide (NOx) emissions and reducesengine combustion noise.

1 Aftercooler lowers inlet chargetemperature. Reduces thermal stressesthat can cause premature wear ofpistons, rings and liners.

2 High injection pressures, independent of engine speed, decrease smoke and emissions whileimproving response.

3 Oil-cooled pistons and full-length,water-cooled cylinder liners providemaximum heat transfer for longercomponent life.

4 Engine oil cooler maintains optimumoil temperature for proper coolingand lubrication.

Engine cooling provided by Multi-Row Modular radiator. Hydrostaticfan drive gives the standard coolingpackage 110F ambient capability.

3 533 mm (21") planetary, electronic, power shift transmission. This is thesame transmission found in the 990Series II wheel loader. Electronicshifting provides smooth consistentshifts with finger tip controls housedin the STIC controller. Thetransmission is built around a centershaft with a gear set cluster stackedend-to-end to distribute load, conserve space and transfer energyefficiently. Large diameter perimeterclutches coupled with high contactplanetary gear sets provide hightorque carrying capacity for long,trouble-free life.

Axle-shaft, oil-disc brakes are fullyhydraulic, completely sealed and neverneed adjustment. Disc face groovesprovide cooling even when brakes areapplied for a long, fade resistant life.

This design provides larger coolingoil reservoir and thicker separatorplates than conventional brakedesigns. This gives the brake higherheat dissipation rates giving it highercapacity than conventional oil-discbrakes.

The location of the brake reducesservice time. Conventional brakesrequire final drive disassembly. Theaxle-shaft brake design allows brakeservice while leaving the final driveintact. Reduced service time andmachine downtime keeps operatingcosts low.

Bevel gear sets and differentials arecommon with the 990 Series II wheelloader.

Impeller Clutch Torque Converterallows the operator to modulate rimpullfrom 100 percent to 20 percent ofmaximum rimpull. After 20 percent ofmaximum rimpull is achieved, furtherpedal travel applies the brake. Thetorque converter is equipped with alockup clutch for direct drive efficiency.

1 Impeller clutch. Locked in fullyengaged position for maximumengine power transfer.

2 Lockup clutch. Provides direct driveefficiency in all three gears withhigher speeds and improved fueleconomy on long distance dozing.

StructuresAdvanced design and materials provide superior strength.

Structures on the 844 are more than 90percent robotically welded. Thisprovides highly consistent welds withdeep plate penetration and excellentplate fusion. The benefit is greaterfatigue strength and longer life thanwith conventional welding methods.

Castings in the engine end-frame areused in critical high-stress areas to helpspread the load and reduce the numberof parts. The casting for the reartrunnion mount also serves as an enginemount, which provides a load path forthe weight and torque of the engine totravel down to the trunnion and then onthrough to the axle. Other castings usedin the engine-end frame include: fronttrunnion mounts, steering cylinderbrackets, articulation stops and locklink.

1 Box-section rear frame absorbs shockloads and torsional forces, solidlymaintaining alignment for hitch pinsand driveline.

2 Four-plate front frame providesmaximum structural strength to resisttwisting loads during dozingapplications.

3 Upper and lower hitch pins pivot ondouble-tapered roller bearings and areshaped to direct stress away from theend of the weld, resulting in asmoother transition of stress loads.

4 Spread-hitch design helps square upthe frame and provides moreclearance for hydraulic lines. Doubletapered roller bearings and hardenedpins resist both horizontal andvertical loads to increase life. Thespread hitch also makes serviceaccess easier.

Engine and transmission mounts aredesigned to use mushroom and cup-shaped ISO mounts, reducingcomponent vibration and sound levels. The engine mounts directly to the rearcross member, simplifying andimproving load transfer structure.

1 Two separate, hydraulic systems. One system is for implements andbrakes while the other is for steeringand hydraulically-driven enginecooling fan. The benefits of theseparate hydraulic systems areincreased cooling and elimination ofcross-contamination. If one systemruns hot or is contaminated, the otherwill be unaffected.

2 Blade control. Armrest-mountedcontrol lever sends signals to a pilotvalve for tilt/tip control and to a mainvalve for lift control.

Tandem vane pumps providehydraulic flow for the lift, tilt and tipfunctions. The circuit is well balancedto provide control when all functionsare used simultaneously.

Well-proven pumps, valves andcylinders are common with thoseused on large, Caterpillar track-typetractors.

For improved serviceability, allhydraulic pumps are mounted on asingle pump drive.

3 Load Sensing Steering with STICControl System is a revolutionarysystem that integrates steering andtransmission into a single controller. The variable displacement pumpmaximizes machine performance bydirecting power through the steeringsystem only when needed. Moreefficient use of power results indecreased fuel consumption andhigher production.

Simple side-to-side motions of theoperators left arm turn the machineright or left.

Transmission shifting forward, neutral, or reverse is controlled by theoperators fingers, and gear selectionis controlled by the operators thumb.

Caterpillars XT-3 and XT-5 hose, O-ringface seals and large-bore lift and tiltcylinders top off the hydraulic system, delivering the performance anddurability owners expect. Reliablecomponents reduce leaks and helpprotect the environment.

Hydrostatic cooling fan is used forengine, transmission and hydrauliccooling. A variable displacement pumpdrives the fans hydraulic motor so thatfan speed varies with rpm. The fandraws only the power needed forcooling, reducing fuel consumption andincreasing efficiency.

Spacious cab design, incorporatinginnovations for operator comfort andproductivity, include excellent viewingarea, interior sound levels below 75dB(A), Caterpillar Contour Series seat, standard coat hook, cup holder, storagebin, sun visor, intermittent wet-armwipers, and is radio-ready for two-wayradios.

1 STIC Control System is arevolutionary system that integratessteering and transmission into asingle controller. Simple side-to-sidemotions of the operators left armturn the machine right or left.Transmission shifting forward, neutral or reverse is controlled by theoperators fingers, and gear selectionis controlled by the operatorsthumb. These factors combine toproduce a fluid motion that reduceseffort and allows the operator towork the machine for long periods oftime with little or no fatigue.

2 Left foot pedal operates ImpellerClutch Torque Converter for aboutthe first inch of travel, then engagesthe brakes. Within the first inch ofpedal travel, rimpull can becontrolled from 100 percent to 20percent.

3 Contour Series seat with airsuspension and retractable seat beltis designed for comfort and support.Seat cushions reduce pressure on thelower back and thighs whileallowing unrestricted arm and legmovement. The seat has three heightlevels. The retractable seat beltremains off the floor and is easy forthe operator to reach.

4 Quick-shift feature allows quickercycle times by shifting from 1stforward to 2nd reverse.

5 Throttle lock allows operator topreset the engine speed andconcentrate on productivity. Thethrottle lock can be deactivated bypressing the brake pedal.

6 Computerized Monitoring System(CMS) uses a vacuum fluorescentdisplay allowing gauges to be easilyread in direct sunlight or at night. The three category operator alertsystem is retained as part of theCMS. In addition, the systemprovides four diagnostic modes, resulting in easy systemtroubleshooting and minimumdowntime.

7 Seat-mounted hydraulic bladecontrols are attached to the rightside of the seat. They are adjustablefore and aft, with a height-adjustablearmrest so that operators of any sizecan find a comfortable operatingposition. Single lever control allowsoperator to control blade functions:lift/lower, tip and tilt. Switch controlon top of control lever allows optionof single or dual-tilt operation.

8 Torque converter lockup clutch isactivated when operator presses aswitch on the console. The 844automatically shifts from torqueconverter drive to direct drive whena set speed in each gear is reached, providing faster travel speeds andless fuel consumption.

Large, viewing area enhances viewingin all directions. Bonded glass in thefront window eliminates distractingmetal frames with the best operatorvisibility to the blade.
