• The study area is located in the parish of Alcântara, in the south western corner of Lisbon.
• Its population was about 13.943 inhabitants (2011), and it has a 4,44 square km area, which represents a density of approximately 3.140 inhabitants/sq.km.
• The study area has approximately 6.380 inhabitants, according to the 2011 data.

• More than half the population are between 25 and 64 years old. However, almost every ranges of ages have experienced negative growths in the past decade.
• 55% of the population of the parish are female, and Alcântara is one of the ‘Top 10’ parishes of the Lisbon with bigger proportion of elderly population.

Public Transport Network
• The study area is served by 14 bus/electric routes, and there are still another 3 bus routes in the surrounding area. The supply is guaranteed by Carris / Transportes de Lisboa.
• There are about 2.300 services/day (2.000 of them directly in the study area).
• The peak hours of the supply are 7:00-8:00 am in the morning and 4:00-5:00 pm in the afternoon, with almost 200 and 160 services, respectively.
• These 17 routes connect Alcântara to different points of Lisbon town and to the Loures and Oeiras municipalities.
• Near the study area there are also the rail stations of Alcântara-Terra and Alcântara-Mar.

Public Transport Network • The public transport network has an excellent
coverage in the study area: 100% of the population is at less than 400 meters of a stop point with at least 6 circ./hour/direction (approximately 10/10 minutes).
• Even when considering only the stop with higher number of circulations, 38% of the population is covered in a 400 meters radius. 6 circ./hour/direction 30 circ./hour/direction

• The parish of Alcântara doesn’t have paid parking and, as a consequence, the parking is not regulated and became one of the main origins of road congestion in this area.
• Buses and pedestrians are particularly affected by illegal parking situations.
• According to the ‘EMEL 2013 Satisfaction Survey’, 80% of the residents in this parish have parking problems (Lisbon’s average is 62%). 35% of the inhabitants have their own parking lot.

Population Mobility (Census 2011)
• According to 2011 Census data, about 29% of the parish residents work or study in the Alcântara parish.
• There are about 18% of trips that are made on foot, while about 43% are held in private transport.
• However, the bus has a great share of 33% in this parish, which is the fourth largest in the city of Lisbon (the average is 19%).

• Between 2006 and 2011, 56% of the accidents in the study area were run overs.
• There were no death in this period, but there were 74 minor injuries and 4 severe injuries.
• Therefore, it is important to increase the safety of pedestrian circulation in the study area.

Main Problems and Next Steps
And in the future… • The accessibility of the study area should be improved with the
expansion of the Lisbon underground network, which will reach Alcântara parish.
• There are also in development some studies to implement "20 mph Zones" in several Lisbon neighborhoods… and that could be a nice solution in Alcântara!
