The accomplishments of women, too, owe much to the “giants” who preceded them — women who bravely endured painful ridicule and overcame huge obstacles to obtain the same opportunities afforded to men.

Native American HeroinePocahontas (c. 1595 – March 21, 1617), later known as Rebecca Rolfe, was a Virginia Indian chief's daughter notable for having assisted colonial settlers at Jamestown. She converted to Christianity and married the English settler John Rolfe. After they traveled to London, she became famous in the last year of her life.

Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was the wife of the first president of the United States. Martha Washington is considered to be the first “First Lady” of the United States. During her lifetime, she was known as "Lady Washington".

Harriet Beecher Stowe1811-1896Abolitionist, Novelist Her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) depicted life for African-Americans under slavery and became influential in the USA and UK. She wrote over 20 books, (novels, e travel memoirs, articles, letters). She was influential for her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day.

ActressCo-founder of the film studio United Artists and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Known as "America's Sweetheart," "Little Mary" and "The girl with the curls," she was a significant figure in the development of film acting.

The American Film Institute named Pickford 24th among the greatest female stars of all time.

Eleanor Roosevelt1884-1962First Lady, social reformerThe First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945. She supported the New Deal policies of her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and became an advocate for civil rights. After her husband's death in 1945, Roosevelt continued to be an international author, speaker, politician, and activist for the New Deal coalition.

President Truman called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements.

She was a United States Senator for New York from 2001 to 2009.

In the 2008 election, Clinton was a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.
