STANDARDS AND PROSPECTS FOR GREEN LIBRARIES IN INDIA:

Indian Green building Council (IGBC): The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC),

part of the Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) was formed in the year 2001 topromote and rate Green buildings in India.

The council offers a wide array of serviceswhich include developing new greenbuilding rating programmes, certificationservices and green building trainingprogrammes.

22/01/2015 13

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-India):

USGBC has also established a LEED hub inIndia to further accelerate the adoption ofLEED in India.

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) hasbeen instrumental in mobilizing the greenbuilding movement in India.

USGBC and IGBC continue their collaborationin advancing the uptake of green buildings inIndia. LEED India projects registered withIGBC till June 2014 would be certified by IGBC.LEED projects in India registered after June2014 would be certified by the Green BuildingCertification Institute (GBCI).

22/01/201514

Green Library Initiatives in India:

1. Perma Karpo Library, Ladakh in Indian Himalayas. 2. National Library of India, Kolkata.3. NIT Library, Silchar.4. The LEED Gold Anna Centenary Library located in

Kotturpuram.

Besides this, Green initiatives and measures have beentaken up by Madras University Library System, CalcuttaUniversity Library System, Delhi University LibrarySystem, Mumbai University Library System. TheUniversity Libraries buildings are converting intomodern buildings known as ‘Knowledge ResourceCentre’, which are on the concept of a ‘green’ building, providing open space learning environment andprovisions for natural lights, natural air and othersustainable facilities. 22/01/2015 15

CONCLUSION:

Going for a Green Library with the specificstandards as set by IGBC and USGBC with aLEED certification will really persuade the type ofservices and facilities libraries will provide to theirusers.

The present study shows that USA leads indeveloping green libraries followed by Canadaand other nations too started to gain awarenessabout the same. In Asia, Singapore and Indiahave taken steps in this direction but still long wayto go.

The need of the hour is to take few collectivesteps by the libraries in going green by saving thevaluable resources, sustaining environment and toindulge in green thoughts and activities.
