William Wordsworth (1770-1850)

-Born 1770 in Cockermouth -Orphaned at age 13 -Educated at Hawkshead Grammar

School -Graduated from St. John’s College,

Cambridge in 1791 without distinction Wordsworth was Britain's Poet Laureate

 from 1843 until his death in 1850.

Early Life

-Took post-Cambridge walking tour of Europe -Fell in love with Annette Vallon in France and

fathered an illegitimate daughter, Anne Caroline -Returned to England shortly after Ann

Caroline’s birth because of political unrest in France

-Continued to support Annette and Ann Caroline despite geographical restrictions

-Revolutionary France was an important influence on the style and diction of his poetry

European Adventures

-Befriended Samuel Taylor Coleridge

back in England, with whom he wrote Lyrical Ballads (1798)

-Moved to Somerset to live with Dorothy, his sister

-Married his childhood friend, Mary Hutchinson, 1820

-Five children

The “Lake Poets”

Wordsworth was a defining member of the English Romantic Movement. Like other Romantics, Wordsworth’s personality and poetry were deeply influenced by his love of nature, especially by the sights and scenes of the Lake Country, in which he spent most of his mature life. A profoundly earnest and sincere thinker, he displayed a high seriousness tempered with tenderness and a love of simplicity.
