Whence we cameHeadline April 1, 2010 Ed Roberts, the maker of the world’s first personal computer the Altair 8800, died yesterday at the age of 68.

• the Altair 8800, was the first computer normal people could a) afford and b) use in their homes, without it taking up an entire room. Kit retailed for $439, 1975.

• Altair 8800 was also the platform Paul Allen and Bill Gates used to make their first programs and launch Microsoft. Ed gave them their start.

• Ed left the MITS computing world 3 decades ago and remained a country doctor in Macon Georgia until his death.

Google Europe boss John Herlihy says that desktop computers will be “irrelevant” in three years. Instead, mobile devices will be the main way people interact with the internet.

Tablet shipments will hit the 11 million mark in 2011, with the iPad making up a large portion of that.

◦ Desktop computer power supplies (PSUs) are generally 70–75% efficient, dissipating the remaining energy as heat. An industry initiative called 80 PLUS certifies PSUs that are at least 80% efficient; typically these models are drop-in replacements for older, less efficient PSUs of the same form factor. As of July 20, 2007, all new Energy Star 4.0-certified desktop PSUs must be at least 80% efficient.[

The prognosticators are divided on this: For as much ground as mobile devices have gained on desktops, the

experts agree that the desktop isn’t going to fade away completely anytime soon. Where resource-intensive tasks (CAD, engineering, content creation, video, high-end gaming, etc.) are concerned, high-end desktops will remain viable due to their comparably affordable pricing, processing power, and upgradeability.

Th Internet—“which really is the cloud”—combined with mobile apps “is changing the dynamics of computing. Most mainstream computing applications are tied to a network or the Internet, but with advancements in silicon and software, a PC is no longer required for most of those applications,” he says. “This has a huge potential impact for not just desktops, but all PCs”.
