WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?

Sustainability consist of six core principles

which underpin eco-friendly or sustainable

designs which are minimal impact on the

environment, be recyclable or reusable,

energy efficient, reduce waste, reduce

water consumption and be sustainable in the

long- term. Alternative energy sources that

are more sustainable are solar, wind wave

energy. Sustainability includes living within

the limits of what the environment can

provide. It is the equal distribution of

resources and opportunities.

It is very important to consider sustainability in

a design process because you need to

make sure your project fits all the guide lines

of it being sustainable for people to ling in for

a long amount of time and be safe.

SOLUTION 1: SOLAR PANELS

In my Discovery Centre I have included many different environmentally sustainable products, such as using solar panels. Solar panels will help both my Discovery

Centre and the area around me, Went Worth Point by it immediately substantially lighten my carbon footprint.

The solar panels is great for my Discovery Centre as it uses clean energy and it will cost less as it is a free

abundant source (the sun). Having the solar panels will also help Went worth point reduce all together the amount of electricity that they use and over time

making the are more environmentally friendly.

SOLUTION 2: WATER TANK

In my Discovery Centre another eco-friendly recourse I have used is a water tank. This benefits the area by

saving a lot of water for the area that would instead go into drains or the ground. The water that gets put into the water tank provides drinking water, domestic

water, water for livestock, water for small irrigation and a way to replenish ground water levels. Rainwater

harvesting presents an opportunity for and increase of water supplies allowing for self-reliance and

sustainability. Sustaining the environment contributes to the overall conservation of our precious natural

resources.

SOLUTION 3: COMPOSTING

In my Discovery Centre another way I have included sustainable designs is having compost bins. By my

Discovery Centre having composting bins in will help the soil for the plants and help the sandy soils retain

water. Compost also assists plant growth and disease resistance, it reduces unwanted insects, limiting the

need for commercial herbicides of pesticides there for preventing runoff pollution. Overall having composting

bins will be better for the environment as we are re-using unwanted scarps and turning then into strong

food for the growth of plants.

DISCOVERY CENTRE:

The Use of Recycled Timber in all our

designs is putting less strain on the

environment to provide us with new

resources instead we are using the

three big R’s Reduce, Reuse and

Recycle.

By us having Water tanks it provide us

with rainwater which means we are

accessing the natural sources by our

self's.

INFORMATION CENTRE:

The Use of Glass in the Information centre

will provide natural sunlight into the

building reducing the need to use

electricity to power lighting, instead we

will be using natural resources.

The use of solar panels means that we

are using the suns energy to provide us

with electricity to generate thorough our

designs.

COMMUNITY CENTRE:

The inclusion of the large vegetation area

gives the information center the right

amount of plants it needs and not only

makes the environment greener, but is

motivating the community to be aware of

the environment and be positive towards

the green society.
