• 130 million children go to school every day in India

CHALLENGES

• Inadequate Funding

• Inappropriate Technology - Poor designs & construction

• Little professional Management : No capacity building, No training of teachers and No involvement of children

• Inappropriate Government Policies

• Lack of water & Waste/Drainage disposal systems

• Little understanding of life-cycle costs, Poor O&M and Little community support

CONSEQUENCES

• Little knowledge among teachers of better personal hygiene practices

• Vandalised & broken water systems

• Inadequate, non-functional toilets/latrines

• Toilet doors stolen/broken, no private space

• No gender separation of latrines

• No hand washing facilities

• Engaging and empowering stakeholders & community

• Professional management of software and hardware components

• Continuous monitoring & evaluation of WASH facilities
