General Cleaning Vocational English Language Training
Module 3
Module Duration: 2 hours (4:00-6:00, Wednesday)
Module Description: Teach 6 vocabulary “action words” (verbs) and three new vocabulary words. Help
students get a basic idea of 5 different colors.
Module Goals:
Have students successfully sign in on their “replica timecard.”
Teach the following words:
o Wash
o Sweep
o Scrub
o Dust
o Wipe
o Spray
o Towel
o Trash can/garbage
o Recycling bin
Review the words through classroom activities
Have students demonstrate actions hands-on
Send students home with vocabulary list and activity handouts to study

Fill out
timesheet

Have students fill out their sign-in/time
sheet when they first arrive in class.
Tell them that it is like a timesheet that they
will be required to fill out for their
employer.
Make sure each student has done the first
week correctly.
Show them where in the classroom they can
find the time and date (you can write it for

Introductions
(10 Min) Introduce yourself
Ask for student introductions
o Ask them to say their name, where
they’re from, how long they’ve been
here and their address or crossroads.
o Ask less if the group is larger than 6
people.

the class and introduce themselves.

Explain that today we will be learning about
action words.
Stress that these are very important for on the
job.
Show the cleaning video.

Demonstrate with props how to spray and wash
the desk/whiteboard, and sweep the floor.
Before each demonstration bring up the
appropriate slide and write what you are doing
on the board.

ACTIVITY: Demonstrate cleaning
Students try
cleaning
(15 Min)
Next, have students try using each item.
Ask the most comfortable student to come up
first. Set out the spray bottle, the rag, and the
broom.
Give them a cleaning instruction in command
form, for example, “spray and clean the desk.”
Repeat with other students and try to make sure
everyone has a turn to try cleaning.

(6 minutes) Watch the video again, pausing to review words
and actions that were covered.
Make sure to talk in helpful and complete
sentences that emphasize the right words: such
as, “she is scrubbing the desk” or “watch her
vacuum the floor.”

Next, have students try using each item.

duster.

Make sure that they sign out on their timesheet

Review Colors
(10 Min) Teach the students the colors: red, yellow,
white, blue and green using spray bottles.
Teach them the idea that different colors clean
different things.

Activity
(15 Min)
Go through the color review activity with the
students.
Give them the handout with the spray bottle
colors.
ACTIVITY:
Go over each slide and see if
any of the volunteers can say
the right color.
If not, ask them to consult
their handout and to say the
right color out loud.
Towel &
vocabulary
(5 Min)
Next, go over the towel vocabulary slide and
give each student a towel. See if any of the
students know the color of their towel.

o Any students that really struggle to understand concepts or are very slow learners.

Have students find the bins in the classroom
and bring them to the front of the class.
Teach them the different items that go in each
using the slides and the miscellaneous
trash/recycle props.

Hold up different items and ask the class if they
go in the recycle bin or the trash can.
Next, give all of the students an item and have
them come up at the same time and put it in the
right bin.
Go through the bins and correct any wrong
items.

students to say aloud whether it is a trash or
recycle bin or whether the item should be
thrown away or recycled.

Have students finalize their sign-in card and
collect them. They are not to go home.
