The future of second language learning?

Hello!

My name is Pedro De Bruyckere

and sorry.(for my flenglish)((aka Flemish English))

Twitter: @thebandb

Website: TheEconomyOfMeaning.com

Book: check

Disclaimer: I/we believe in education!

Disclaimer: I believe in teachers!

Well in most teachers!

You know!

Even better: we know the importance of teachers!!

(Hattie, 2009, 2012)

Many teachers do good work, but all too often on the basis of incorrect theories.

But also:

Very popular, No evidence!

(Coffield, Moseley, Hall, & Ecclestone, 2004)KolbsLearning styles

Even worse: differentiation for learning styles has little to no effect!

(Hattie, 2009, 2012 and quite a lot of others)

But it did work! Why?

The power of learning.

The power of feedback.

But also:

The power of relationship.

And also: mnemonic tricks

2 lessons learned: 1. Dont trust what you think you know

2 lessons learned: 2. Its also relevant to know why something did work!

Next on my list:

Aka: the Loch Ness Monster of Education!

Where does it come from?

Who made it?

Dale?

Bale?

Glaser?

Glasser?

National Training Laboratories (NTL)?

Cone of experience = one of the first theories on multimedia learning (1946)

John Adams (1910)Order of concreteness:the real object, for which anything else is a more or less inefficient substitute; a model of the real object; a diagram dealing with some of the aspects of the object; and a mere verbal description of the object

The pyramid has been debunked in 2007.

(Lalley & Miller, 2007)

Again 2 lessons learned: 3. Never trust neat percentages!

Again 2 lessons learned: 4. Dont forget to think!

Aka: Flip it!

One method for any goal with any student in any given context????

But the biggest lesson I learned: 5. Check the sources!

Prof. Mehrabian

Is ninety-three percent of our communication non-verbal?

Unless a communicator is talking about their feelings or attitudes, these equations are not applicable.(Mehrabian himself)

Do note: the non-verbal does exist!

And what about Gardner?

Guess who thinks this could be a myth?

Gardner:

A myth that irritates me is that people place my intelligences on the same foot- ing as learning styles. Learning styles say something about how people approach everything they do. If you are good at planning, people expect you to have a plan for everything you do. My own research and observations lead me to suspect that this is a wrong assumption. (Gardner in 1997)

Oh, and btw:

Talent intelligence

(Waterhouse, 2006)

All good things come in threes?

Maslow

Lesson 6: An image helps to convince!

(Newman, et al., 2012)

Lesson 6: An image helps to convince!

(Newman, et al., 2012)

Checking the sources can also be very surprising

And while talking TED

What about him?

Sir Ken Robinson

Does school kill creativity?

This study does exist.

(Land & Jarman, 1993)

But Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking uses a narrow definition of creativity.(Sawyer, 2012)

School kills creativity does sound like:Society corrupts the child(De Bruyckere ,Struyf & Kavadias, 2015)

TED-talk (yes) by Tim Leunig also debunking Ken Robinson: Why real creativity is based onknowledge

Better question imho: does school foster creativity enough?

Last lesson for today?

Dont be fooled by difficult or nice sounding words.

Do you need the brain for the claim?

Do you need the brain for the claim?

Underdeveloped prefrontal cortex =kids do sometimes impulsive things(Willingham, 2012)

Dopamine is released during gaming =kids like video games.(Willingham, 2012)

Massive brain plasticity in early life =little kids learn a lot.(Willingham, 2012)

Im maybe a bit too harsh, but its a good trick to check.

And even if it sounds correct?

Stay critical!

There is no such thing as digital natives!.

Technology versus content

7 lessons learned, many more followed

But remember: maybe one day cream pies or hot fudge may be declared healthy

So to conclude: what I havent said!?

Be a boring teacher.

Do: Do vary, be concrete.

Dont use technology.Do use IT: Pupils need to learn to use IT wisely too.

People dont differNot in learning style, but they do differ in prior knowledge and interests.

Stop trying and (re)searching? There is a still a lot to discover.
