a / an means “un/una”. It always goes before a singular noun
or substantive.
When the noun starts by consonant you must use a.
When the noun starts by vowel you must use an.
E.g.:
a secretary
a cook
a teacher
a monkey
a pencil
a shop
an engineer
an electrician
an elephant
an ocean
an orange bike
BUT…!!!
An hour (letter h doesn’t sound)
A hot dog (letter h sounds)
A university (letter u sounds like a consonant)
An unusual situation (letter u is a vowel here)
Plural of a/an is some
