Her own daughter, Holena, was proud and lazy. She ate sweets all days. But her stepdaughter, Mary, was modest and hardworking.

One day, Holenacommanded Mary to go to the forest and bring some violets.

Mary went through the snowdrifts. She came to the glade

The fire burnt in the middle and twelve men – twelve months - sat around. The oldest man – the January –had the heavy sceptre in his hand. „What are you doing here in the frost?“, asked the January to Mary

My sister sent me for violets, I can´t come back without

it“, Mary said

We can help you“, the January said. He gave his scepter to the April. and suddenly there was spring for a short time. The violets have blown on the hillside.

The stepmother and Holena were surprised when Mary came back home. They decided they had a fancy for strawberries. Mary had to go to the forest again next day.

Mary came to the glade to the twelve months. They helped her again. The January gave his scepter to the June and there was summer for a moment. The strawberries reddened on the bank of the stream. Mary picked up it quickly, she thanked and went home.

The stepmother and Holena ate the strawberries and they sent Mary out again next day, for the fresh apples.

Mary came to the glade again and she asked the twelve

months for help.

January gave his scepter to September and there was autumn for a short time. Two apples ripened on the apple tree at the edge of the forest. Mary picked them.

The stepmother and stepsister were angry. Why only two apples? It isn´t enough. We are going in the forest ourselves.“ They wore the warm clothes and they went away.

The January got angry, he swept his scepter and suddenly there was the gale and snowstorm. Both women couldn´t find their way and they froze in the forest.

Mary lived happily for ever.
