Language Research Tradition
CONFIRMATORYDESCRIPTIVE
The new social view of doing research is hybrid research (mixing the classical traditions of research). This new social view follows the
classroom-oriented research (the researcher accounts not only for the "inside" classroom but also for the "outside" classroom - what surrounds the classroom such as culture, community, approaches,
policies, etc.)
• A descriptive research aims to produce Quali & Quanti accounts of classroom processes.
• Ellis, R. 2012DESCRIPTIVE TRADITION
• 1, The objective can be studied scientifically.
• 2. To form the hypothesis the phenomenon is divided into clearly defined elements /constructs.
• 3. The measure of the variables must be desmonstrably.

DESCRIPTIVE TRADITION
ETHNOGRAPHY DESIGN
The research intention is to study peple’s behaviour in naturally occuring on going settings with a focus on the
cultural interpretation of behaviour
INTERACTIONAL DESIGNThe research intention is to study: Discourse Analysis Conversational Analysis
CASE STUDY DESIGNThe research intention is to examine something in
a real-life context, and use theory to
generalize results. Yin (2003
ACTION RESEARCH DESIGN
The research intention is to
solve specific problems within a program, organization, or
community

NARRATIVE DESIGNThe research intention is
to“inquire” into--or asks questions about and
looks for deeper understanding of--
particular aspects of life experience
CONFIRMATORY TRADITION
QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL The research intention is to
determine whether a program or intervention has the
intended effect on a study’s participants. While a true
experiment includes (1) pre-post test design, (2) a
treatment group and a control group, and (3) random
assignment of study participants, quasi-
experimental studies lack one or more of these design
elements.
EXPERIMENTAL The research intention is to
involve at least a treatment, an outcome measure, units of
assignment, and some comparison from which
change can be inferred and hopefully attributed
