BrainPOPSpecific Use, Skills, Standards:

Provides videos, games, quizzes, and concept mapping to encourage students to think critically. There are a wide range of topics that complement appropriate common core standards.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

Students are required to show their mastery of various levels. They have to remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Therefore, BrainPOP meets Bloom’s Taxonomy and activates appropriate higher level thinking skills.

Privacy and Feedback:

After each video clip, there is a quiz that records grades. Teachers can ensure their students understand the material via this feedback mechanism.

Ease of Access:

For a small subscription fee, BrainPOP allows access to 800+ videos and quizzes. Content layout and access is simple and self-explanatory. Content is clearly marked and overall functionality is remarkably smooth.

Grade Level: K-5

Why Top 10?Having such a wide range of topics that is formulated in such an easy to understand animated way is an efficient way to reach the most students. It takes the stress out of learning new things!

ArtsoniaApp for Art Educators

Specific Use, Skills, Standards:

Provides students with a digital option to create a portfolio of their artwork. Teachers can access each student’s portfolio, making it easier to grade assignments and keep track of student work throughout the year. Students can share their portfolios with each other, creating a dialogue to discuss their artworks. Meets all Visual Art Standards in the areas of “Presenting” and “Responding.”

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

This app allows students to professionally document their work and learn how to digitally present their work. This app can help students in school and in their professional practices. Because students are able to share their portfolios with each other, they can have critiques and discussions both inside and outside of the classroom.

Privacy and Feedback:

Artsonia is an extremely private app. You must have a school code and account in order to use it as a teacher. Students names must be on the teacher's roster located within the app in order to use it. There is a teacher feedback option in order to share grades and information with the students.

Ease of Access:

This app is very easy to use and access. The setup can be time consuming for the teacher, because they have to enter each student into the system, but other than that, the app creates easy access for both teachers and students while providing easy to understand instructions to follow.

Grade Level: 4-12

Why Top 10?Meets all common core standards in the areas of “presenting” and

“responding”, it is easy to use, and creates for easier organization for both students and teachers. Creates another form of dialogue between

students and teachers by using new digital approaches.

Adobe Illustrator DrawApp for Art EducatorsSpecific Use, Skills, Standards:

Students can create illustrations/drawings, customize their workspace and import them into Illustrator or Photoshop on the computer. This app meets all standards located within the “creating” area of the Visual Arts guidelines located within the Fine Arts Curriculum guideline.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

This app allows for higher level thinking skills because the students are able to create authentic, creative works of art. Students are also able to describe, analyze, and judge their works of art that they create through this app.

Privacy and Feedback:

There is high privacy with this account. Students must have access to an Adobe Creative Cloud account in order to use this app. Students can keep their work private or share with others if they decide to do so. There is no feedback option for this app-- it is strictly used in the “creating” process.

Ease of Access:

This app is easy to use if you are familiar with Adobe softwares. This is something that I find is important to teach older students because of the options it opens up for them in the creative process. This app is intuitive because it allows students to freely and easily create digitally authentic works of art.

Grade Level: 7-12

Why Top 10?This app opens doors for students in the creative field and

allows them to use softwares that a large majority of professionals use while creating their own unique works.

Muffalo PotatoApp for Art Educators

Specific Use, Skills, Standards:

Teaches young students to draw while also practicing and learning their alphabet and math skills. Students follow along with the instructions on the app and create their own drawings on paper. Teachers meet standards relating to the “creating” area in the Visual Arts Curriculum Framework while also integrating other subject areas into the lesson.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

This app allows young students to be creative while also practicing math and letter recognition skills. If they answer a problem incorrectly, they are given more chances and hints on how to better answer it.

Privacy and Feedback:

This app serves as an educational game and doesn’t have privacy options. Feedback is given based on whether students answer problems correctly or not.

Ease of Access:

This app is extremely easy to use and can be used by students individually or used by the teacher in a large group activity. This app is intuitive to an extent but it depends on how much math and letter recognition skills the child has. So this will vary based on each child.

Grade Level: Pre Kindergarten-2nd

Why Top 10?This app is fun and engaging for younger students and allows them to learn without using traditional learning

methods.

Smithsonian: Artists in Dialogue 2App for Art Educators Specific Use, Skills, Standards:

Allow students to explore current and past exhibitions at the Smithsonian. Students can read about the background information pertaining to each piece and there are audio recordings of the artist talking about the meaning behind the artworks. Having visual and audio descriptions about each work allows for all students to utilize the app to best fit their educational needs. Students can also create digital artworks, take art quizzes, and talk with other artists in the art community. Students will be able to perceive and analyze artistic artwork, interpret content and meaning in artistic work, and relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding. All of these points come from the Common Core Standards that fall within the Visual Art Appreciation/Fine Arts Curriculum Framework.

Students are able to experience the practices of professional artists while also being able to have a dialogue with them. This allows them to better understand the contemporary art world and apply that knowledge to their own art practice.

You do not have to create an account to use this app and others are not able to see your activity on the app unless you participate in the dialogue area of the app.. Students can receive feedback from professionals by actively engage in conversations with artists in the art community

This app is easy to navigate and has each area of content laid out on the homepage. All information can be obtained through readings and audio recordings.

exhibitions from the comfort of their own daily environments. Never has viewing exhibitions been so easy! They are able to easily engage with professional artists and ask them direct

questions about their work, while also applying this knowledge to their own practices.

This app allows students to engage in a multiple choice game and see answers in real time. Because educators can create their own questions, it can easily be matched to the appropriate standards/outcomes.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

Students can be provided questions that use Bloom’s Taxonomic methodology. The questions can encourage students to evaluate, analyze, apply, and understand. This app can help complement a teaching lesson to activate these higher level thinking skills.

Privacy and Feedback:

Answers are shared openly with the class. This game is usually played together to celebrate learning and make it competitive. There is great opportunity for great personal and group feedback during gameplay and it increases student engagement.

Ease of Access:

Games can be joined instantly with no account. The game connection is stable. Gameplay is usually only one click, and there is virtually no setup time.

Because of the shared learning experience and the competitiveness involved, this app makes learning fun and engaging. Students look forward to Kahoot! Time where they can compete with their friends to see who can score the highest.

Google ClassroomSpecific Use, Skills, Standards:

Students and co-teachers can share information about assignments, announcements, and questions. Teachers can create, collect, and grade assignments paperlessly. Students can even keep track of what’s due and it greatly improves their overall communication ability.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

Google Classroom promotes higher order thinking. For example, students have to determine central ideas from readings, analyze statistics, and synthesize new information to draw conclusions on questions provided by the educator.

Privacy and Feedback:

All student accounts are password protected access to documents can only be shared with authorized users. Feedback is instantaneous and allows great announcement and grade communication.

Ease of Access:

Google Classroom setup can take some time. Each student needs a google account and there might questions and concerns with regard to locating/storing files. Familiarity with the google format is a prerequisite.

Why Top 10?In what might be one of the greatest collaborative apps of all-time, Google Classroom helps teachers save time, keep organized, and improve communication ability. These are crucial components in ensuring learning opportunities are available to students.

YouTubeSpecific Use, Skills, Standards:

YouTube can be accessed by students and teachers to complement any lesson in helping students achieve the appropriate standards.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

YouTube fosters higher order thinking in students as it offers a diverse source of materials from which teachers can draw.

Privacy and Feedback:

In some cases, teachers may set up students accounts. However this app is mostly used to allow access to videos and keep students engaged. There is no way to record or measure feedback.

Ease of Access:

YouTube is a popular app/website that is practically used universally. Its format and accessibility is easily understood and helps students access education videos quickly and efficiently.

Why Top 10?While this app is so popular it might be overlooked, one must not forget how powerful easy access to a diverse group of educational videos can be.

History HereSpecific Use, Skills, Standards:

Provided by the A&E Network, History Here is a mobile app that allows students to explore historical sites that might be around them. It’s a powerful engaging tool that provides students with perspective and historical context to help them with a deeper level of understanding.

Higher Level Thinking Skills:

This apps helps immerse students in their local history and help them when traveling abroad. They can use the information in the app to help them analyze, understand, and evaluate the significance of historical events.

Privacy and Feedback:

No private information is needed to set up. There is no feedback since the app is fact based.

Ease of Access:

The app has an easy sign-up feature and should be a quick and easy way to jump into learning.

Utilizing a radial tree visualization technique, this app allows students to see how article and pieces of information intersect and connect with one another. It’s an important approach in helping students engage and understand their learning objectives.

Bloom’s Taxonomy is used here when students are connecting topics and seeing the way that ideas intersect and combine to create greater ideas.

This is an independent explorative app that doesn’t have feedback options. There is also no need for an account, so privacy is not a concern.
