1. Dominant

The dominant in this shot from the film Blade Runner, is the character Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford. The dominant is created by:

Character placement: Deckard is placed near the centre of the frame, whereas Rachael is at the very far corner of the frame.

Lighting: Rachael is wearing all black and she is not lighted at all, while Deckard is lighted better.

Staging Positions: Deckard is facing us (full-front), while we see Rachael’s profile.

2. Lighting key

The lighting key in this shot is high contrast. High contrast lighting fits the genre, since it is a dystopian science fiction movie. The lighting features harsh shafts of lights and dramatic streaks of blackness.

3. Shot and camera proxemics

The shot type used in this shot is medium shot. The characters are shown from knees up. This allows us to see the background and the other objects in the frame, without putting all the focus on the two characters.

4. Angle

The angle in this shot is eye-level. The chosen shot type fits the scene as it is not a dramatic scene and no power relationship is suggested at that point of the story between the two characters.

5. Color values

The use of color in this shot is significant, because it gives the audience clues and a general idea of their dark dystopian world. The scene is set in the Tyrell Company building. Like the gloominess we see in this scene, their whole world and lives are gloomy and colorless. In this scene, there is no color diversity at all, everything looks in various tones of sepia.

6. Lens/filter/stock

Wide angle lens is used in this shot; we have a clear sense of depth of the background and a broad area is shown in this shot. This lens was chosen in order to give the audience a good idea of the building,the atmosphere in the room,the environment and their dystopian world as a whole.

7. Subsidiary contrasts

The main subsidiary contrast in this scene is Rachael. She doesn’t stand out as much as Deckard because she is not lighted well, she is not facing us and her clothes blends with the background.

8. Density

The image is not very dense, since we can’t really identify many objects in the background,except the two characters and the chair. Therefore we cannot say a lot of information is packed in this shot.

9. Composition

This shot has a binary composition. The standing of the characters suggests parallelism and gives a vertical sense. This also gives a sense of formality to the scene.

10. Form

This scene has a closed form. All the necessary information is packed within the scene and mise-en-scene is structured carefully and consciously. This suggests stress,space seems enclosed and it of course fits the genre of the film which is dystopian science fiction.

This shot has loose framing. They have plenty of room to move around. This suggests freedom. They are in the huge building of the Tyrell Company.

12. Depth

The depth in this scene can be counted as moderately deep since it focuses on more than one plane, but not all the planes are in focus (for instance the buildings at the furthest plane in the background). The choice of moderate depth gives the audience a better idea of their world, and it fits the genre (dystopian science fiction).

13. Character placement

Deckard is placed in the center of the frame, whereas the other character is placed at the far right of the frame. This shows that Deckard is the focused and important one. The distance between the two also represents the contrast between them. Deckard is human whereas Rachael is a replicant.

14. Staging positions

Deckard, the character on the left is full front. The replicant is facing Deckard, and from this we see her profile. Rachael seems to be focused on Deckard, and she is literally standing like a robot slave. Both her stance and her staging position foreshadows the fact that she is a replicant.

15. Character proxemics

The distance in this shot is social. The two characters do not stand so close nor so far from each other. Their distance shows the characteristic of an impersonal business meeting, and it is actually a formal meeting in the movie.
