INTRODUCTION

After a long experience in supporting student in pursuit of higher educa-

tion, it was realized that there should be some scheme to identify brilliant stu-

dents at the highschool level and to promote them from their higher secondary

education till the acquisition of highest level of competence.

Talent Searches are intended to assess a studen’t academic abilities and

potentials. The Science Talent search sponserd by intel is the granddaddy of

them all when it comes to academic contests and talent searches.

The ‘Science Talent Search’ is America’s oldest and most prestigious

science research competition for high school seniors. Since 1942 first partner-

ship with ‘westing house’ and since 1998 with Intel. Every year 40 finalists are

selected from a pool of thousands to attend the week-long science Talent insti-

tute where students present their research projects to the public and members of

the national accademy of science.

National Science Talent Search Scheme

National council of Eduational Reserch and Training was established by

the Government of India in the year 1961 with a view to bringing about qualitative

improvement in school education. In the country. No soonce council was setup than

it mounted a number of programmes in this direction. One such programme was to

identify and nurture the talented students. This programme took up the shape of a

scheme called National Science Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS). In the year 1963

which provided for the identification f talented students and awarding them with

Scholarships. During the first year of the implementation it was confined to the Union

Territory of Delhi where in 10 scholarship were awarded to the class XI students.

In 1976 NSTS Scheme underwent a change. It was made open to students of

class X, XI, XII separate examination were conducted for each class. The number of

scholarships was raised to 500. Selection procedure also changed. Candidates were

subjected to two objective type written tests namely the Mental Ability Test (MAT)

and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Candidates who qualifing these two were sub-

jected to face to face interview. In1981 number of scholarship become 550. 50

scholarship for SC and ST candidates. In 2000 it was raised to 1000. In 2006 NTS

examination was held to VIIIth students from 2012 the NTSE will again be held for

class X students.

Objectives

1. To stimulate scientific talent by a competitive process leading to recognition of

merit.

2. To provide special programmes in science to such scholars with a view to nurture

their talent.

3. To encourage schools to take more active interest in the search for scientific abil-

ity.

4. To help students to perceive course in basic sciences by the award of Scholarship

from Bsc to Phd levels

5. To Identify boys and girls at the close of the secondary stage who possess a

marked aptitude for science and Mathematics.

Eligibility

Students studing in class X only eligible for NTS examination

Rewards

Students who qualifies second stage are cligible for scholarship. Rs. 1250 Per

Month for class XI and XII students and Rs 2000/- Per Month for students graduates

It is the first talent search programme in India opened Its doors to the first batch of

10 Scholars who recieved the award from India’s first prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal

Nehru then,52 batches of scholar have come under the scholarship and nurtures

scheme and have became a member of the JBNSTS family with whom a strong bond

exists and who in turn have done us proud by contributing significantly in this respec-

tive field of work.

Today it is considered a premiure institute of its kind in the eastern and northestern

region of india. Working in 13 states of india with objectionve of Motivation.

Objectives

To select the students with special aptitude for science and providing a scheme for

counselling, conserving and helping this most precious resource namely human tal-

ent, which is necessary for building up the nation, by award of scholarship and other

wise

* To help the Students realize the importance of excellence in scientific world.

* To Identify talented students of science, engineering and Medicine who shall de-

velop into scientists and technologists of very high abilities

* To nurture them through enrichment programs to develop their talents.

Conclusion

Science talent search programmes helps to identify and recognize students with

hight intellect and acadamic talent. It mobilise the interest and support of higher cen-

tres of learning and other science agencies for the development of scientific talent and

encourage schools to take more active interest in the search for scientific ability.
