Be obedient (ὑπακουω hypakouō present active imperative) Be subject, v. 18 (ὑποτασσω present middle imperative)

To follow instructions, obey, follow, BDAG

Obedience leads to discipline Doing what you don’t want to do is good for you! Self discipline is necessary for life

Obedience prepares you for your future You will have to obey others as an adult

Obedience equals order Disobedience equals disorder God is a God of order, 1 Corinthians 14:33, 40

Punishment for dishonoring parents was severe in OT Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9; Deuteronomy 21:18-21

The Fifth Commandment, Exodus 20:12 Would stay in the Land if their children obeyed

Generational importance

They were a redeemed people before the Law Exodus 12:7, 13

Sanctification equals reward Keeping the Law meant Israel could stay in the Land

Being sanctified equals reward at the Bema for Believers, 1 Cor 3:10-15; 2 John 8; Revelation 22:12

Sanctification is well-pleasing, Romans 12:1-2

Children fulfill God’s purpose for them at this point in their lives.

Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart. Colossians 3:21

Fathers (οἰ πατερες): can mean parents Hebrews 11:23

Do not exasperate (ἐρεθιζω erethizō) Stir to action, provoke, agitate Pick on them like a bully

Discouragement means no chance of lifelong obedience.

Still responsible to discipline Proverbs 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15, 17
