Sociology is essentially the scientific, objective study of man in society, the study of social

institution and of social processes: it seeks to answer the question of how society is possible,

how it works, why it persists (Swingewood, 1972: 11)

Culture & Historical Background of the Author

Culture and historical background of literary works reflects the social background where the author creates the works.

History always follows the development of life.

Sociology of literature which focuses on social life cannot be separated from the social background that influences the literary works itself.

Laurensen & Swingewood, 1972: 18

From 1849 to 1850, Dickens worked on David

Copperfield, the first work of its kind; no one had ever written a novel that simply

followed a character through his everyday life. In

writing it, Dickens tapped into his own personal experiences, from his

difficult childhood to his work as a journalist.

He started publishing his first novel, Oliver Twist,

which follows the life of an orphan living in the streets. The story was inspired by

how Dickens felt as an impoverished child forced to get by on his wits and

earn his own keep.
