Colonization of Virginia

Raleigh planed to colonize Virginia, and parts of North Carolina in 1584 but it ended in failure at Roanoke Island

His failure helped to pave the way for other colonies.

He paid the way for most of his trips and his friends often helped, but it never provided enough funds to keep a colony up and running in America.

In 1587, Raleigh tried another trip and started a settlement on Roanoke Island.

But many different settlers were sent on this trip, some were entire families

Mean while Raleigh hired a Portuguese pilot to help him navigate another voyage.

Colonization

But its wasn’t until 1591, 4 years later that the supply vessel arrived back at the colony.

All the colonists had disappeared, the only thing left of their existance was the word CROATOAN" and letters "CRO" that were carved into separate tree trunks.

Which leaves us to assume that they were either massacred, absorbed or taken away by Croatans or other native tribes.

Others think that they might have been swept away or lost at sea during a storm.

Whatever happened to them, the settlement is now remembered as the "Lost Colony of Roanoke Island”.

Other Voyages and his death

1594 Raleigh sailed to South America to search for the "City of Gold" along the way he wrote a much exaggerated account of his experiences which helped to feed the legend of El Dorado.

Queen Elizabeth died in 1603Raleigh was placed in the Tower again, but this time

because it was thought that he was part of the plot against King James I. but he was let go in 1616 in order to search for El Dorado again.

This was trip was unsuccessful and a Spanish outpost at San Thomé was destroyed by men under his command. After they returned to England he was arrested for this and after a show trial held mainly to appease the Spanish after Raleigh's attack of San Thomé, he was beheaded at Whitehall.
