Real progress and welfare of a country or a civilization depend upon both Gyana (knowledge)

and Vigyana (science). The same is also true for happy upliftment of a person or a society. Lack

or negligence on either front results in degradation and decline. Gyana means that which

generates and expands enlightenment, discerning wisdom, farsightedness, benevolence,

generosity, justice, integrity, alertness and sense of responsibility. Vigyana is that which initiates

and promotes materialistic progress, capabilities, talents, power, resources, prosperity and

worldly success. Mutual coherence and simultaneous growth and expansion of both Gyana and

Vigyana is what accounts for truly fulfilling and durable progress and ascent of life.

Development of both had flourished in India in the Vedic Age. This is why Vedic era is glorified

as Golden Age in the history of mankind.

This paper develops proposition which deals with the global contribution of ancient Indian

tradition. The present research is being done through literature reviews of various ancient and

contemporary texts to prove the present clause. It is an effort to let the people know the glory of

Science and Philosophy of Gayatri and Yagya [Global Contribution of Ancient Indian Tradition]

Abstract

It is an effort to let the people know the glory of

great horary Indian Culture, Tradition, Civilization and the underlying science within.

Introduction

Once upon a time India was described as a land of heavenly life…; every man and woman who

lived here was equivalent to divine beings. The mention of 33 billion manifestations of Gods in

the Indian scriptures refers to these inhabitants of ancient India. It is a country of golden heritage

and glorious past. All branches of knowledge and civilization are said to have emanated from the

Indian Philosophy and Culture which were disseminated across the globe through the dedicated

altruist endeavors of the Rishis. India was supposed to be the eminent guide of the entire world in

pre and post Vedic age. The scientific and socio-economic development here was so advanced

those days that India was often referred as a “Diamond Bird” – a symbol of immense

prosperity. The periphery of the Indian culture was so vast that practically the whole world was

lying in its domain of influence until several thousand years ago.

Purpose

A large number of scholars and researchers of world-history, oriental culture and intellectual

evolution have elucidated different aspects of ancient India and on contributions of India to the

entire world. The present research had reviewed the foundation and expansion of the culture and

civilization of India and a comprehensive research document had been prepared. It provides

details with evidential information and references on the global expansion and history of cultural

civilization with respect to enormous contributions of India to the rest of the world.

Global Contribution of Ancient Indian Tradition Reason for research

Be that religion, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, archeology, sociology, art, architecture,

science, technology or any other horizon of civilization and culture, the seers and sages of India

had generously bestowed their knowledge, guidance and creative help to the rest of the world. In

fact many of them had gone to remote corners of the earth to elevate the status of life and culture

there. In this effort, many of them had eventually resided in the foreign lands for ever.

Authentic proofs and references available in the above regard are still available with respect to

India‟s contributions in different countries ranging from – North America (USA), Latin America,

Mexico, Germany, Egypt etc. to South Africa, Kampuchia, Laos, China, Japan, Russia and

Australia. Similar details are cited here for small countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius,

Indonesia, Fiji, Korea, Mongolia, Burma, etc, where the influence of Indian Culture is quite

evident even today.

Once again, the revival of the glorious era of Indian cultural values and philosophy of life would

be seen across the globe through the creative endeavors of those who have realized the divine

origin and worth of the Indian Culture – including ancient religion, science and philosophy.

Today when the very survival of the human race appears to be facing the unprecedented risk of

extinction, the danger of suicidal end of the „advanced‟ civilization cannot be avoided without

empowering the force of humanity. Refinement of the value system and purification of the

external and internal environment of life have therefore become necessary. The Indian cultural

system has all elements required for the sustenance of progressive life and rise and culmination

of human values up to divine heights. Its resurrection therefore appears to be the best option in

the current scenario. Great visionaries see this as a certainty and the present research is an

important step in making all these facts acceptable and well known to one and all with its science

and philosophy for practice in daily life.

Science and Philosophy of Gayatri and Yagya

Pillars of Indian Culture

Guru --- spiritual mentor, Gayatri --- the Gayatri Mantra, origin of all Vedas, Ganga --- the

holy Ganges, Gau (cow) and Geeta are the five fundamental elements which lie at the core

of the development and practices of the Indian culture. It is through these roots that the stout

tree of divine Indian culture had blossomed in the ancient times of yore and has maintained its

'greenery' age after age despite turbulent fluctuations in people's faith, convictions, cultural

values and modes of living. Implementation of the divine cultural principles becomes possible in

every dimension of life with the support of Guru, Gayatri, Geeta, Gau and Ganga at the

spiritual, philosophical and worldly levels.

Gayatri

It means; “O God, Thou art the Giver of life, the Remover of Pains and Sorrows, the Bestower

of Happiness; O Creator of the Universe, May we receive The supreme, sin-destroying light;

May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.”

Gayatri As Eulogized In the Ancient Scriptures

The self-existent eternal power of Supreme Consciousness - the source of all existence and

activity, was realized by the Indian sages of yore as Gayatri. It is defined as Vedmata - the

genesis of all Vedas. The four Vedas - Rik, Yaju, Sama and Atharva and hence all streams of

knowledge are said to have originated from the Gayatri. The absolute knowledge described in the

Vedas is fundamental to the expression of consciousness, to all activities of living beings and the

Nature through the four major components of life pertaining to - Rik (religion, spirituality,

welfare and peace), Yaju (potentials of physical and intellectual progress), Sama (creativity, play

and enjoyment) and Atharva (materialistic development). The Indian scriptures describe that

Lord Brahma - the eternal creator, had created the cosmos with the help of the knowledge

emanated from Gayatri in the Vedas.

The manifestation of the omnipresent power of Gayatri in the cosmic expansion of eternal sound

was discovered by Maharshi Vishwamitra as the Gayatri Mantra. This mantra is glorified as the

smallest and absolute religious scripture for all ages. In terms of knowledge, this mantra is the

root, representing the essence of Indian Philosophy and its divine culture. In terms of acoustic

effects and the science of mantras, the Gayatri Mantra is the source of limitless powers of

consciousness and a perfect compilation of the cosmic and spiritual reflections of eternal sound.

Pt. Shri Ram Sharma Acharya is recognized as the Vishwamitra of the present era for his

dedicated endeavors of eliminating the misconceptions associated, since the medieval times of

religious corruption and cultural deformation, with the devotional practices of the Gayatri

Mantra and for his success in reestablishing the glory of this great knowledge. He propagated the

true knowledge of Gayatri in scientific light and took it to the people across the world without

any discrimination of religion, caste, creed, sex, social status, etc.

Importance of Gayatri described in Scriptures

The Vedas, Shastras, Purans proclaim the importance of Gayatri. In Atharva-Ved, the following

prayer has been offered to Gayatri in which it has been described as one which gives longevity,

energy (Pran Shakti), domestic animals, fame, wealth and spiritual splendor (Brahma-tej).

"स्तुता मया वरदा वेदमाता प्रचोदायनताां पावमानी द्विजानाम ।

आयु: प्राणां प्रजाां पशुां कीर्तत द्रद्ववणां ब्रह्मवचचसम ॥

- अथवचवेद १९ १७-१

Almighty God in the form of Vedas has stated in Atharva-Ved “May Vedmata Gayatri to whom I

offer prayer, purify dwijas (brahmans) and grant them longevity, spiritual vital energy (Pran),

animals, fame, wealth and spiritual splendour‟‟.

"यथा मधु च पुष्पेभ्यो घृतां दगु्धाद्रसात्पय: ।

एवां द्वि सवचवेदानाां गायत्रीं सार उच्यत े॥"

- व्यास

Just as honey, ghrit and water or milk are the essence of flowers, milk and taste (ras)

respectively, so also Gayatri Mantra is the essence of all the Vedas.

"तददत्यृच: समो नाद्वस्त मांत्रो वेदचतुष्टय े।

सवे वदाश्च यज्ञाश्च दानाद्वन च तपाांद्वस च ।

समाद्वन कलया प्राहुमुचनयो न तददत्यृच: ॥"

- द्ववश्वाद्वमत्र

Rishis and seers say that there is no other Mantra like Gayatri Mantra in all the four Vedas. Ved,

Yagya, dan (donation, charity), tap are not equivalent even to a fraction of Gayatri Mantra.

„„मननात ्पापतस्त्राद्वत मननात् स्वगचमशु्रते।

मननात ्मोक्षमाप्नोद्वत चतुवचगचमयो भवेत्॥‟‟

- गायत्री तांत्र

By contemplating on Gayatri, sins are destroyed, heaven is attained and a man accomplishes all

the four basic pursuits viz. Dharma (righteousness), Arth (wealth), Kam (worldly pleasures) and

mokshya (salvation).

Science of Gayatri

Gayatri is defined in the Vedas as the source of all spiritual powers. It enlightens the soul and

educes immense strength in the Sadhaka (devotee). The vibrations of Gayatri Mantra generate

physical, mental and spiritual energy in and around the Sadhaka who recites this mantra, under

proper discipline, with sincere faith and devotional meditation on rising sun. In the state of deep

meditation, the Sadhak's consciousness gets linked to the divine impulses emanated from the

subtle body (Savita) of the Sun. At physical level too, the vital energy of the Sadhaka attracts the

cosmic energy waves and empowers the s Sadhak's body and mind.

Activation of Internal Power Centers by Gayatri Sadhana

The masters of Mantra-Vidya know that words are

uttered by different parts of the mouth such as,

throat (larynx), tongue, teeth, lips and the root of

the tongue. During speech, the nerve-fibres of the

particular parts of the mouth from which sound

emits stretch upto different parts of the body and

put pressure on the corresponding glands. If

particular glands of the person concerned are

diseased or dysfunctional he starts stammering

while uttering the specific words. There are many

large and small, visible and invisible glands in the

body. Yogis know that some specific energies lie

hidden in these glands, Shat-Chakras (six energy

centre) related to the Sushumana are quite well-known but there are several other such glands in

the body. The utterance of different words has its impact on different glands and by such impact

the energy of these glands gets stimulated. Mantras have been composed on this basis.

There are twenty-four letters in Gayatri-Mantra which are related to twenty-four such glands

located in the body which, on getting stimulated, activate and awaken the powers of righteous

wisdom.

Singing of Deepak-rag lights up extinguished lamps. It starts raining when megh-malhar tune is

sung. The melody created by playing flute makes the snakes wave their hoods in synchronicity,

deer gets swooned and cows start yielding more milk. The warbling of cuckoo incites passion.

Even strong iron bridges may collapse by the sound created by the in-step, coordinated and

rhythmic marching of a troop soldiers. The army is, therefore, forbidden to march rhythmically,

in-step, while crossing a bridge. Dr. Hutchinson of America has achieved success and fame in

curing several patients suffering from incurable and painful diseases by different musical sounds.

In India, Tantriks keep a Thali (large metallic plate) on a pot and play it in a special rhythm and

are capable of curing persons bitten by poisonous snakes, scorpions etc. and those suffering from

thyroid goitre, Vishvel (poisonous creeper), ghosts, mania etc. The vibrations of a specific sound

spread in the ether and attract atoms of similar type and return to their origin within few

moments, duly charged with appropriate energy which exercises curative impact in the

appropriate area. This is how Mantras accomplish miraculous effects. The chanting of Gayatri

Mantra activates the network of nerves in the mouth and stimulates specific glands. No sooner do

they get stimulated, a Vedic symphony is created which spreads in the ether, takes a round of the

entire universe, coming back to the source with its energy augmented manifold, capable of

fulfilling the desired purpose.

It is shown in the sketch, which particular letter of Gayatri is related to which part of the body.

Gayatri activates the above-mentioned twenty-four divine qualities in the devotee. With their

growth, varied accomplishments (Siddhis) and prosperity start manifesting in the life of the

devotees. Most of the people think that some god or goddess is bestowing these gifts because

Page 8: Science and philosophy of yagya

they are unable to see and understand the working of these subtle divine energies and the

transformations flowing therefrom. Once they understand that transformations are taking place as

a result of their own Sadhana they would realise that it is not by way of some unexpected gift

from somewhere but is the result of a well organized scientific process of spiritual growth.

Gayatri Sadhana is not based on blind faith but has a solid scientific basis.

Yagya

Sanskrit word "Yagya" means "Sat Karma - Noble Deads". All activities in the limitless

expansion of the universe are said to have generated from a grand eternal Yajna (Yagya). Yagya

means - selfless sacrifice for noble purposes.

The behaviour pattern of Nature follows the spirit of Yagya. The Ocean gives its water to the

clouds. Clouds carry and pour then as rain. Rain fed soils and rivers and in turn return to ocean.

Each part of body constantly working for the well-being of the whole body. Wherever we turn

our eyes we can see that the cosmos is run on the yagya spirit

Yagya comprises of three elements: of Gods - Appreciating noble qualities

- Unity

- Welfare/Donation

Rishis have said that yagya is like the hub of the wheels of creation.

Yagya - the root of Vedic culture

The four Vedas signify the philosophy of the eternity and absolute complementary role of

Gayatri and Yagya in the divine creation. Atharvaveda also deals with sound therapy aspects of

Mantras for the treatment of the ailing human system at the physical, psycological and spiritual

levels. The Samaveda focuses on the musical chanting patterns of the Mantras and the subtle

form of Yagya by defining the latter as the process of mental oblation on the surface of internal

emotions through the cosmic radiation of the omnipresent subtle energy of sound. The Yajurveda

contains the knowledge of principles and methods of performing Yagyas as Spiritual and

Scientific experiments for global welfare.

The Teachings & Philosophy of Yagya

Why do we regard the sacrificial fire of Yagya as purohit (priest)? It inspires us to imbibe its five

idealistic qualities in our life.

1. Fire has the characteristic of always being hot and bright. We are inspired to lead bright,

radiant, active lives like fire, full of wisdom and brilliance.

2. The flame of fire always goes upwards. One may apply any amount of pressure but its

flame never goes downwards. It teaches us that despite immense pressures of fear and

temptations our flame of wisdom, and foresight should ever be kept-alight and up-turned.

Page 9: Science and philosophy of yagya

[INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INDIAN CIVILIZATION THROUGH THE MELLENNIA ICTM-2012]

Krishna Publication I.S.B.N. 978-81-8283-237-4 Page 9

3. Anything coming in contact with fire becomes fire itself. We should also have such a

quality of excellence in our character, so that anyone coming in our contact may become

refined.

4. Fire accumulates nothing. Whatever is offered in the fire is vaporized. It is scattered

throughout in the atmosphere and becomes universal. We should also not accumulate

possessions for our selfish ends but utilize all our resources and qualities for advancing

the good of the people. We should be generous and lovingly kind.

5. The residue of fire is ashes. Ultimately physical forms of all human beings are going to

be reduced to a handful of ashes. The idea behind applying (ashes of Yagya) on the

forehead is that man should always remember the inevitability of death and utilize each

and every moment of his life in the best possible manner.

These five teachings are known as panchagnividya which the priest (purohit) in the form of fire

teaches to every human being. A man is truly blessed if he imbibes these teachings in his daily

life by performing symbolic worship in the form of Yagya.

The real purpose of Yagya is to imbibe virtues like self-sacrifice, self-restraint (sanyam), charity,

beneficence, generosity, compassion etc. in our daily life. It inspires us to surrender everything,

body, mind, ego and soul to God. A Sadhak on surrendering himself to God, who has been

described as Yagya-purush in the scriptures, becomes one with Yagya, just as samidhas on being

consumed in the sacrificial fire of Yagya become fire itself. In fact the real Yagya is to follow

the directions and inspirations of our indwelling divinity and imbibe righteous tendencies.

Constant remembrance of the Divine, keeping an attitude of detachment and remaining

engrossed in regular sacred studies and devotion amounts to leading a Yagyiya life. Such a

person sees the presence of God in everyone, everywhere and becomes free of evil deeds and

sins.

Scientific Aspects of Yagya

There are two basic energy systems in the physical world: Heat and Sound. In performing

Yagya, these two energies, namely, the heat from Yagya's fire and the sound of the Gayatri and

other Mantras, are combined to achieve the desired physical, psychological and spiritual benefits.

The fumigation of specific substances in the Yagya - Fire is a scientific method of

subtulization of matter into energy and expanding its potential and positive effects in the

surrounding atmosphere. The electromagnetic waves generated thereby help in transmitting, at

cosmic level, the desired sonic signals 'stored' in the Mantras, which are chanted during the

process of sacrificing the special materials in the fire.

Yagnopathy - application of Yagya for healing

Amidst the fascinating achievements of the modern era of science and technology

in improving our comfort levels, stress and pollution have posed the major

challenge for man. The industrial wastes, rapid urbanization, deforestation, air and water

pollution, disturbances in the ozone layer -formation, radioactive waves etc., have destabilized

the human, animal and plant life cycles. The ecological imbalance caused by these acts of

Page 10: Science and philosophy of yagya

„civilized men‟ has resulted into disastrous threat not only to human survival but to the life as a

whole on our planet. Experimental studies show that the incidence of physical ailments, sickness

and disease are reduced in the houses, where the Yagya (Agnihotra) is regularly

performed because it creates a pure, nutritional and medicinal atmosphere. It

renews the brain cells, revitalizes the skin, purifies blood and prevents growth of pathogenic

organisms.

Agnihotra is basically a healing process. “Heal the atmosphere and the healed atmosphere will

heal you”- si the Modus Operandi. Purification of environment through the constituent electrons

of the substances fumigated in the Yagya is an obvious effect of this process. The observation of

some distinguished scientists is note worthy in this regard.

Dr. Hafkine has mentioned that – “mixing ghee and sugar and buring them creates smoke which

kills the germs of certain diseases and secretion takes place from some glands relate to the wind-

pipe, which fill our heart and mind with pleasure.”

Sugar present in Havishya have great power to purify the atmosphere. It kills the germs of TB,

measles, smallpox and cow-pox, remards Prof. Tilward. According to Dr. Shirowich a Russian

scientist has remarked that (i) Cow‟s milk contains great power of protection from atomic

radiations; (ii) Houses having cow-dung covered floors enjoy complete protection from atomic

radiations; (iii) If cow‟s ghee is put into Yagya fire, its fumes lessen the effect of atomic

radiations to a great extent.

The medicinal fumes emanating from Agnihotra have been observed by researchers in the field

of microbiology to be clearly bacteriolethal in nature. These eradicate bacteria and other micro-

organisms, which the incidence of physical illness and diseares. This must be the reason why the

incidence of physical ailments, sickness and diseases becomes less in the households, where

Yagya is regularly performed.

Even without going into detailed chemical bacteriology, it can be stated that performance of

Yagya leads to purification of air.

Some Case Studies on Result of Research in Scientific Laboratories:

The following sample of experiments and case studies were reported in.

Some Psychological Studies:

In this study Dr. Selvarmurthy has observed neurophysiologic effects of the mantras of special

kind of agnihotra, which is performed at the time of sunrise and sunset.

In this experimental study eighty healthy men were chosen as subjects. Significant changes

occurred after the proper agnihotra; there included – (a) GSR remained significantly higher

during the proper agnihotra (b) ECG showed DC shift in the base line (c) EEG showed alpha

enhancement and delta suppression for more than 15minutes.

Diabetic Treatment: The urine sugar level of some acute diabetic patients was found to be

totally absent and the level of blood sugar was reduced to normal just two to three weeks of daily

agnihotra.

Page 11: Science and philosophy of yagya

Relief from Drug Addictions: An officer of 25 years age who had been a poly drug abuser in

the past was selected for the study by Lt. Col. G.R.Golecha, a senior advisor in the psychiatry

division of the Indian army. He had underwent some de-addiction courses twice but when

agnihotra was introduced only then only he found improving motivation to abstain from smack

and showed significant decrease in his urge for it within a few weeks.

Bhopal gas tragedy and agnihotra: The tragic incident occurred on the night of December

3,1984 when the poisonous MIC gas leaked from Union Carbide factory at Bhopal. Hundreds of

people died and thousands were hospitalized but here were two families- those of Shri Sohan Lal

S Kushwaha and Shri M.L. Rathore, living about one mile away from the plant who came out

unscathed. These families were regularly performing agnihotra (yagya). In these families nobody

died, nobody even hospitalized despite being present in the area worst affected by the leakage of

the toxic gas. This observation implies that agnihotra is a proven antidote to pollution. (English

Daily – ‘The Hindu’ of 4-5-85; news item under the heading ‘Vedic Way to beat pollution.’)

Discussion

Scholars of cultural, history, archeology and spiritual philosophy recognize India as a country of

rich heritage and glorious past.

Despite excellent progress in science and technology and progressive experiments on

socioeconomic fronts, the state of the world today is far away from being happy and peaceful.

Rather, the decline in human values, the suppression of morality by selfishness, ego, thirst for

power and the perversion of thoughts and debauch of desires by lust for sensual and materialistic

pleasures, etc, have even put a question mark on the very survival of humanity. In this period of

"crisis of faith", refinement and transmutation of mentality, attitude and intrinsic sentiments of

the people seem to be the only hopes for permanent solutions. Spiritual and devotional practices

devised by the visionaries of yore offer the key to success in achieving this change in feasible

duration of time. Yagya and Gayatri are considered as the two basis pillars of human life and our

culture. The Sadhana of Gayatri stands atop all spiritual endeavors in above respect as well.

Because, it is universal, risk-less and unanimously recommended by all spiritual saints and

erudite scholars of Indian Philosophy as the best Sadhana for total removal of the negative

effects and malice of past sins and simultaneous refinement of the unconscious and conscious

mind. Yagya in itself is a way of living if understood rightly and practiced thoroughly in life.

Need of the hour is to apply it in all works of life to get desired results.

Conclusion

What we see today in the Indian society is largely an impaired and superficial custom of gayatri

and yagya. The knowledge of the philosophy and science of gayatri and yagya is essential for

understanding and experimenting the science of spirituality as the knowledge of elementary

physics for the material science. Further scientific research and large scale experiments on the

potentials of gayatri and yagya will help make it a distinct way of far reaching benefits to

humanity at large and open up newer directions for constructive integration of the modern and

ancient science. It is the best possible way to generalize the secrets for the humanity and to give

a new revelation of life in order to understand the supremacy of our ancient tradition and its

contribution to rest of the world.

During the course of creating the Science and Philosophy of Gayatri and Yagya [Global

Contribution of Ancient Indian Tradition], we have gone from knowing nothing about the

importance of ancient tradition to knowing just a little bit. Enough to keep us wanting to know

more. During this tenure, we have read many books and studied lots of web pages. We read

translations of aspects of the Vedas. We spoke to laypersons and experts. We are indebted to all

these people.
