EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Australia has approximately 9,500 schools, imparting education to more

than 3.5 million students. While 71% of the total schools in Australia are

government schools, independent and catholic schools constitute

remaining 29%. Approximately three–fourths of all the schools are located

in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland alone. Further two–thirds

of all the schools are primary schools. However, as majority of the

government schools are primary–only schools, majority of independent

schools are both primary and secondary. Majority of the schools providing

special education are also operated as independent schools.

65% of all the students go to government schools, and 99% take up full–

time education. More than three-fourths of all the students study in New

South Wales, Victoria and Queensland alone. Northern Territory has the

highest enrollment in government schools, while South Australia has the

highest enrollment in independent schools. Further Western Australia has

the highest primary enrollment, while Tasmania has the highest secondary

enrollment. Students in the age–group 0—14 constitute more than two–

third of the total enrollment.

Of the total in–school staff in Australia, two–third comprises of teachers.

Further, two–third of the total staff works in government schools. There

are approximately 122 students for each teaching staff. The ratio is highest

for Queensland, and lowest for Northern Territory.
