History of Cheynes TrainingHistory of Cheynes Training

• Developed 1st pilot NVQ programme in 1987/88

• Launched SAM – 1st national training programme to deliver NVQs – in 1989

• Started the SAM Programme with a handful of salons, now over 200 involved

• Around 650 ‘Candidates’ on SAM at present• Thousands of 3-6-5 hairdressers have

launched their career with SAM

The greatest asset any business has is the means by which it ensures that firstly, the right people are attracted to the business (in the right numbers) and secondly, that they are trained to do the job to the required standards.

The greatest problem facing hairdressing as we enter the 21st century is people:

• Attracting the right people• Training them to the highest standards• Keeping them in the business

People are the key resource in hairdressing, if we have no new hairdressers, we have no tomorrow!

There are four major ‘people threats’ preventing us from building our teams…

•Demographic change – not as many young people•Social change – young people expect much more•Changes in the economics – it costs more to train people than ever before•Changes in the employment and training climate - there are more rules

In 2009, there are almost two million less 16 - 24 year olds in Britain than in 1995

This means that in a town with a population of 100,000, there are now 3,500 less 16 - 24 year olds than ten or twelve years ago !

Q: Into which age group does 66% of all salon hairdressers and… 95% of all new entrants to hairdressing fit ?

We live in a different world than we did 15, 10 or even 5 years ago

In the world today, people are not prepared to wait…

…young people want things now - and if they are training to be a hairdresser they are probably watching their friends get a much better package than they are!

What package does a 17 year old office worker get?

Hours p/week - 35 hours - working day 9 to 5Late nights - none (overtime payments)Holiday - 5 weeks and all Bank HolidaysPension scheme - normal (and sick pay also) Lunch - 1 hour + subsidised meals Breaks - am + pm without failBonus - Christmas bonus is usualWeekly pay - £250 upwards

How much does it cost to train a young person to be a hairdresser?

•It takes between 500 and 600 hours to train a hairdresser from scratch

•The cost of training a single individual is between £12,500 and £17,500

•But... that is provided that all assistants remain with the salon. The true cost could be between £20,000 and £30,000

Changes to TrainingChanges to Training

Apprenticeships / Advanced Apprenticeships

• Different ways of accessing funding from the government via the Learning & Skills Council

• Each has set levels of funding attached, and requires different levels of training

• Funding is only available to ‘approved’ training providers

• Training must lead to NVQs plus Key Skills

Changes over the next three years include…

•14-19 Diploma – 14 and 15 year old pupils will be taught hairdressing studies at school•Further Education Teaching Qualifications – aimed at professionalising vocational training

What isWhat is SAM?SAM?

SAM is a comprehensive training system which allows salons to produce high quality hair designers in the shortest possible time and which provides a National Vocational Qualification without the need to send people out of the salon.

Our aim is for SAM to become the training programme of choice for all 3-6-5 salons.

The salon owner needs a well trained, highly motivated, committed young person who wants to go on and build a successful career…

A college or a local managing agent delivers a piece of paper that says NVQ on it and the quicker the college or managing agent can achieve this piece of paper the quicker they get paid!

At all times, salons are guided by Cheynes Training to ensure they get the very best from the programme.

•The key people in SAM•Team of around 20 specialists – top professionals from salons that use SAM•RTAs launch the programme in each salon •Visit each salon at least every three months•Available for advice 24 hours each day•RTAs keep salons on track!

In the UK, the programme is usually government funded, this pays for all of our services:

• Registration of Candidates with City & Guilds• Candidate Logbook and Portfolio • All assessment material• All programme manuals• Minimum of four RTA visits p/a • On-going hot-line support• One City & Guilds Verifier visit p/a• Final certification costs, etc

Should you go private?

Some salons choose to opt out of the Government system and instead pay us direct for our services:Advantages of this system…

• Candidates complete much more quickly• No Key Skills to contend with• Less interference from authorities• No need to have training qualifications• Less pressure on everyone involved

• Once you agree to commit the resources, we will confirm your funding with the Learning and Skills Council, or

• We will give you an exact costing if you choose not to take Government funding

• We will then appoint a Regional Training Advisor to visit your salon to discuss your exact needs

• The RTA will visit and go through every aspect of the training and leave an action plan of things you need to have in place

• The RTA will work with you to make sure everything is ready for the launch date that you set with your RTA
