Rock Costume Analysis

The ArtistThe style of rock as a whole has greatly changed. A majority of artists now wear leather and ripped clothing. My front cover will feature one artist who is wearing a suit; this is an attempt to distance himself from the rest of the genre. Trying to bring the traditional look of rock back. Rock used to be more sophisticated, people would wear suits to perform and to watch. The artist will be wearing a suit so that when he performs he is bringing back the old style of rock, meaning that he wants to bring back the old style of rock; he isn’t a heavy metal artist or a punk artist. He prefers the classic side of rock. Making music based on the style of rock that bands like The Beatles, Chuck Berry and Pink Floyd. Instead of wearing leather, and chains or more eccentric clothes, he will be wearing a suit or another form of business wear. He doesn’t want his music to be something you just listen to when you’re bored, he wants to bring back the art and showman ship of rock. Although he wants to bring back the old smart look of rock, he also likes to wear the more psychedelic style that Beatles perfected, while still keeping some of their old sophisticated look.

Over the years the style of rock has greatly changed. Rock used to be about looking classy and playing in clubs, but over the decades it evolved into concerts and gigs. The style of rock also changed, not just the style of music but the clothing. It used to be that performers would wear suits but it progressively got more eccentric and now tends to just be all black. The main time that it changed was when psychedelic rock started to become very popular; people would start to dress more and more eccentric to try and keep up with the artists. Once metal and hard rock started to become popular the style changed once again, more people were in black and leather. This is do to most of the artists’ music being ‘dark’ and to give their style a serious, brooding feel. Even the black leather and black suits have changed; punk rock has also been becoming more popular and with that the general costume has changed, moved from black suits and leather to tight, black clothes and leather.Rock tends to be a more male centred genre. There doesn’t tend to be as many female artists in rock, especially in classic rock. Classic rock, while there were a lot of female artists, it did tend to be more centred around the male audience. Most people know more male rock artists then female, and when they do think of female artists only a few tend to come to mind. E.g. Stevie Nicks. Now more and more females are becoming known through indie rock and punk meaning that rock has greatly evolved and attracted a much large audience. Even though females are becoming known classic rock is still male dominated and there aren’t too many female classic rock artists.

Like all music rock will continue to develop and evolve into hundreds of different genres. However, this doesn’t mean that we should forget about the roots of all rock. People will still be listening to the songs and analysing the music styles of the past great legends of rock and roll.
