Are you male or female?

This question is significant clearly because knowing whether the majority of our audience is male or female is very important, so it helps us to know what sort of things to put into the documentary that can appeal mostly to that one gender. The overall result from this questionnaire was that mostly females were answering it. 19 females and 11 males. This helps us to now know that we can specify quite a bit of the content in the documentary to suit a females expectations but also making sure to include some content for males as well.

How old are you?

Knowing the age of people answering our questionnaire is vital because we were aiming to find people within our target audience and their opinions. The overall result of people answering the questionnaire was people aged 16-20, this is a good result but it only identifies part of the target audience which is 16-30. The second highest result was 21-25 so it balances out. The age is significant because now we specifically know what age appropriate things we can include in the documentary and what will appeal to which ages.

How often do you watch documentaries?

How often do the audience watch documentaries is a good thing to know because this could help us determine how often we put our documentary on tv, as some can be repeated over a few weeks. Majority of the feedback was that people watch documentaries fortnightly and less than monthly. This helps us know how often our documentary could be watched.

What type of documentaries do you like?

Responses to this question varied and nearly all people answering the questionnaire selected about 3 types of documentaries. As seen by the results the three that were most popular were Gaming, Nature and Music. Now these results are helpful so we know what our target audience enjoy watching but as results show fashion documentaries was not a very highly chosen answer. Maybe this is because there are never many documentaries about fahsion on tv, that could give us the inspiration to make our documentary good so people would want to watch it and enjoy that type of documentary.

What features do you like to see in documentaries?

The results from this question are important because we can know exactly what most people in the target audience like to see in the documentaries they watch. Once again this was a question where they could choose more than, the top two answers were unusual/interesting topics and entertainment. I think that these two are the top two answers we were hoping for because our documentary will include both of these features, because vintage fashion is quite a specific yet unusual topic that you don't see very often. As our documentary will include these features it will gain us a wider audience.

Which channel do you mostly watch?

This is one of the most important questions because this can help us decide for definite which channel we will be putting our documentary on. Most people answered choosing channel 4 which reflects well with the target audience because research shows that most young adults watch channel 4. The minority of people ages 25+ chose BBC 2 as it is a more factual channel where older documentaries are usually shown. From these results, we know that channel 4 is the bets choose for our documentary.

Knowing what time the audience usually watch TV is vital as then we know what time is suitable to broadcast our documentary, as we want to ensure we appeal to our target audience in everyway. The overall majority of answers were evening and night (after 9pm) which is watershed, were chosen. These were the times we were thinking of but just somewhere in between so then we could aim to reach a bigger audience, as we could catch those who only watch tv up to 9pm when watershed begins.

What type of music do you like to hear in a documentary?

This music question helps us just to know what type of music we could use in the background of our documentary. Overall most people chose instrumental music which is a good choice because that way we have a wider range of songs to choose from. Not may people chose slow music which is understandable because sometimes documentaries with quite slow music can get boring. Using instrumental music in our documentary would also gain us a wider audience of that type of music lover or just those who enjoy music in documentaries.

What colours do you associate with vintage fashion?

The answers from this question help us to decide what colours to use on the titles, backgrounds and other graphics in the documentary. It could also influence what we ask people during interviews because they could have a different opinion on these colours. Most of the answers were evenly split which makes it hard to decided which ones would be best to use but from numbers, most chose white and beige. I didn’t think these would be the chosen answers so it is quite surprising but this gives us a good insight into what the target audience associate with vintage fashion.

This question could influence one of the questions we ask during interviews. Knowing why people think fashion is important is a vital part because that is the main topic of the documentary in a way. Our documentary will be specially aimed at people who do like vintage fashion and culture, therefore we’re assuming that the majority of our viewership will have positive views on vintage fashion. Quite a few people also thought that vintage fashion is sophisticated which does reflect the whole style.

The wide range of answers we got from this question allows us to look into several different styles/eras of vintage fashion. For example, we can look at several different styles of vintage dresses, possibly from different eras, that look classy, girly, smart, etc. Most of these words that we got are associated with each other, this gives us good direction of which styles we can focus on and what type of things can be associated.

Do you follow new trends?

This question gives us a guideline on what styles of clothing we could feature. As majority of people that have answered the question said that they do not follow new trends it could influence our documentary in the sense that we can focus on those people who do not follow new trends because old trends could be associated with vintage fashion, because some older clothes look nicer than others and are being brought back into style.

Page 15: Questionnaire Results

How often do you buy new clothes?

This question gives us an idea of how much people care about their own style and the importance of having new clothes. Majority of the people answered saying that they buy clothes monthly, this could link to the fact that not many people follow new trends. Do you own any vintage pieces?

This is quite a significant question because knowing if people own many vintage pieces can influence our documentary and how much people know about of care about vintage fashion. There was quite a split between people both owning pieces and not, I think that most people aged 21-25 answered that they do own vintage pieces. This can influence the documentary because we could ask some people to show us their vintage pieces.

The answers were quite split to this question and this can help us with knowing about charity shops and how popular things are from there. Our filming locations can be influenced by this and also influence who we interview because we would want to make sure we interview some people that actually purchase things from charity shops.

Page 19: Questionnaire Results

Do you donate to charity shops?

This is a very similar question and answers so we know that, we can interview people that donate to charity shops and why they donate. Also how their clothes can be classified as vintage fashion.

Have you or would you be interested in attending vintage fairs/events?

The different answers here show us some vintage fairs and events that we could research in to, as well as let us know people’s willingness to venture further into vintage culture. Even though majority of answers were no, the few yes answers give us specific shows and events people go to, this shows us that some people are actually really into vintage fashion and exploring it further. This helps us with the interviews & questions we could potentially ask.
