Evaluation Question 3

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND

WHY?

Page 2: Question 3

WHAT IS A INSTITUTION?• An institution is any company or organisation that produces or distribute a media text.

• Produce – The process of planning and coordinating various aspects of film production, such as selecting script, coordinating writing, directing and editing, and arranging financing.

• Distribute – The process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.

• Institutions fund a film, the directors or producers can go to a institution to pitch their idea for the film and could also ask if the institution would fund the project.

• Institutions can choose what platform to release your film on and give a date for release.

WHAT INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE OUR FILM• ‘Delinquent’ is a mainstream British thriller film, and we would like to make that a big

selling point, therefore our ideal distributor would be Film 4 Productions.

• Film4 Productions is a British film production company owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The company has been responsible for backing a large number of films made in the United Kingdom.

• Film 4 Productions would work in synergy with a major Hollywood film institution such as Universal or Warner Bros. This is because they might need the financial backing to distribute it in the UK and other countries.

• ‘Delinquent’ is a UK based film but it will be available internationally as

we are looking to make the maximum amount of revenue.

FILM4 PRODUCTIONS• Film4 has developed and co-financed many of the most successful UK films of recent

years, Academy Award winners such as Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire and Phyllida Lloyd’s The Iron Lady in addition to critically-acclaimed award winners such as Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner, Chris Morris’s Four Lions, Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges, Shane Meadows’ This is England, Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers, Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant, Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin and David Mackenzie’s Starred Up.

• Film 4 Productions are a good choice because they have experience when working with successful thriller films, internationally.

• They have worked in synergy recently, to produce ‘The Riot Club’. This is similar to our film because it is a British Thriller and it was made available in all countries.

Page 5: Question 3

HOW FILM4 PRODUCTIONS WOULD ADVERTISE• Film4 Productions is a subsidiary of Channel Four Television Corporation

• This producer has many sister channels, therefore Channel Four TV Corporation have horizontally integrated.

• This means that ‘Delinquent’ can be advertised on many different UK TV channels and Radio Stations for a cheaper price.

• Some examples are – Channel 4 and Magic

HOW FILM4 PRODUCTIONS WOULD DISTRIBUTE• There are many different methods of distribution that Film4 Productions have available:

• Online

• DVD/Blu-Ray

• Cinema

• I am going to analyse each method over the next few slides

Page 7: Question 3

ONLINE• This is the distribution of a media text (In our Case Film) using the internet.

• A good thing about distributing films online is that it is available to pretty much anyone, as long as they have a computer and internet access.

• Digital distribution has recently become very popular in many countries as it is a lot cheaper. For example a Netflix membership is £5.99 for a month, with over 1000 films to watch from.

• Delinquent will be available on all popular streaming services

Page 8: Question 3

DVD/BLU-RAY• DVD’s used to be very popular because ticket prices for cinemas are expensive

• However recently with the introduction of streaming, DVD’s and Blu-Ray sales have dropped.

• Delinquent will also be available on DVD and Blu-Ray sale after the cinema release

Page 9: Question 3

CINEMA• Cinema release is the most traditional distribution method and one of the most effective

techniques of distributing a film.

• Ticket prices for cinemas are high, this means that revenue income will also be high

• People are willing to pay the high ticket price as going to the cinema can be seen as an experience
