Question 2

• How effective is the combination of your main product with ancillary texts?

• Divide your answer into two sections, section 1 Digipak and section 2 Magazine Advertisement

Page 2: Question 2

Digipak Panel 1• My digipak design choices conform to the notion of a coherent promotional

Package. I used images from my music video in order to influence my digipak

Visually through themes and positioning. The main theme running throughout the Digipak is the creation of fantasy, and this is portrayed through the use of overlapping opaque images to produce a dream-like feel.• Furthermore, I frequently used the notion of looking (Goodwin) through the protagonist to reinforce the idea of ‘Alice through the looking glass’. This Is also referenced throughout my digipakWhere the protagonist reappears in Panel 4. The way in which the protagonistIs not directly looking at the cameraReinforces the coming of age theme, bySuggesting that she does not know whichWay to go and is not in direct contact withThe audience/reality.

Digipak Panel 2• Panel 2 links visually with the music video as the bunting can be

seen at 0:39. The bunting is a British signifier, and is used in the digipak with opacity to further reinforce the fantasy theme.

• Furthermore, the bunting is typically used as a symbol of celebration, suggesting the protagonist’s celebratory journey through coming of age.

• The natural woodland setting used in the music video is coherent with images used in the digipak. In panel 2, the use of leaves in the background could represent the protagonist's wild and free attitude in her youth, contrasting with the societal expectations

demanded of her in reality.

Digipak Panel 3• Panel 3 further reinforces the consistency of my digipak, through

linking themes of nature and the notion of looking. The inside of the cradle contains a close up image of the protagonist (Goodwin), a conventional technique used in the music video which I also used in the digipak in order to promote The band’s music and the music video.

• The outer layer of the panel consists of an image focused on bark wood to emphasise the theme of nature which is present

throughout the music video and digipak. This settingIs conventional for a music video promoting pop genre,Because the natural lighting reflects the brightness and Positive tone reflected in this genre. This generic themeCan also be seen in my digipak.

Digipak Panel 4• The final panel concludes the narrative structure of the digipak,

coinciding with the narrative structure of the music video. Each panel corresponds chronologically with a scene in the music video which the Audience may be able to identify with.

• This panel links explicitly with the music video because the photo was taken at the time of shoot, thus creating a direct visual link with the ending of the music video.

• The use of darkness/shade not only reflects the ending of theMusic video, but also represents the ending Of the digipak, reinforcing the narrative linkBetween the digipak and the music video. The contrast between light and dark is a theme that can be found throughout my music video representing the conflict thatThe protagonist feels on her journey.

Magazine Advertisement • My magazine advert links visually with my music video, using the river setting as a backdrop

for the overlapping image of the protagonist to reinforce the fantasy theme. This scene differs from the rest of the music video which involves a woodland setting, and offers an alternative image to promote the bands music.

• The use of the ‘this way’ ‘that way’ signs appear at 0:29 as a reoccurring motif developed from my music video. The signs are significant because they not only reference ‘Alice in Wonderland’, they represent the decisions

young people are faced with when coming of age and growing up.

First Aid Kit – Stay Gold• First aid kit are a band I used as visual inspiration for my front panel,

exploring the use of overlapping images to create a psychedelic fantasy feel. The band conform to a coherent promotional package by taking themes present in their Single ‘My Silver Lining’ music video and using them on their front panel to promote their album. These themes include use using doubleExposure photography to reflect their psychedelic image, as well as overlappingTo create ghost-like imagery.
