Question 2:

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Hip-Hop

• The genre of my magazine is Hip-Hop.• This is a very popular genre among many people, my target however is aimed at

black British or American females. From the ages of 18 to 34.

My Model• Female Model: I chose my for my model

to be a female because that’s who my magazine is targeted at. I wanted to make a Hip-hop magazine that empowers women instead of degrades them because usually the women in Hip-hop magazine are under dressed and over sexualised so I wanted to challenge that.

• Black Model: Majority of the Hip Hop female rappers are black, and their message in their songs are very inspiring and strong and it also allows the reader to relate to the magazine.

• Styling: I chose for my model to wear red and black this was because I noticed that those a very predominant colours in the Hip-hop genre. I also chose for the chains to stand out because Hip-hop artists show their jewellery off at any moment they get.

• Props: For the DPS (double page spread) the prop is a red marker this was an intention so it looks like she wrote the headline

NVC• Hip-hop magazines have a sense of power and attitude

and that’s what I wanted my magazine to have.• Most of the poses I asked my model to do connoted

both of those.• Every Hip-hop artist is different especially the women

some rap sexually for men and some of them challenge the men.

• Although my magazine is mainly for women many male Hip-hop artists inspired my choices.

• My models eye contact is directly at the camera and is also pointing this connotes authority and will draw the reader into the magazine.

• I also noticed that Hip-hop magazines usually have artists with either a serious or stern look or an artist with a humorous expression, my models facial expression is quite stern.

Colour Scheme• From making my mood board I noticed the main colours and chose them for my colour pallet.• I wanted my magazine to be mainly black and white with some hints of colours e.g. the chain.• I believe these colours connote hip hop because they are very common for this genre.
