Question 2

how does your media product represent particular social groups?

Page 2: Question 2

.

How do the photos in your magazine share similarities with the magazines that influenced your production?

• I think that my magazine represents similar social

groups to Kerrang! The photo’s I used in my magazine where similar to that used in Kerrang!’s magazine as the boys all seem quite casual and natural they stand facing the camera as if to address the audience. This is similar to an image taken from Kerrang! (on the right) where the boys are also quite casual and are also leaning against a wall with one folding his arms.

How do the facial expressions /hair styles represent your featured artists?

• The facial expression in this image( left) looks serious and almost pained this fits with the cover line that I was trying to portray. ‘Going solo? Matt make or break the black out’

• His facial expression is very believable as it illustrates a tough decision to make. In contrast the image from Kerrang! Displays a serious and rebellious facial expression with a happier tone to it as the cover line states a 10 year celebration.

• The hair in the image is natural displaying the model is down to earth and is not high maintenance also portraying the idea that he does not want to be part of the music industry any more. The hair style of the boys in the Kerrang! Magazine has styled hair and seems hard to manage this could be the idea that Kerrang is more to display style rather than showcase music

How does the shot type and angle play a part in the representation of your artist?

• The shot type and angles of my photos do not really differ much they are mainly long shots allowing the audience to see the whole of the artists and display a casual effect.

• • The image on the left is a long shot tilting slightly

down this gives the representation that the musician is in a natural situation and is very down to earth. Which is what I wanted my magazine to be like this and more about music rather than of style.

What impact did lighting have on the photos and representation of featured artists?

• The lighting in the photos in my magazine is very similar as they are all taken outside however the image on the front cover is brighter as it is taken using the flash and is taken at night time this image has quite dark colours in it and could reflect the idea that he is going through a hard time due to the black and grey colours used.

Page 6: Question 2

What impact choice of costume has on the representation of featured artists?

• The costumes used in this image represent the artists well as there is diversity between the groups. One is wearing a ‘Bob Marley’t –shirt giving connotations that he enjoys various types of music.

• There is an ‘abercrombie and fitch’ t-shirt in this image aswell which is a designer brand this could make the magazine appeal to different social groups as the characters in my image appeal to a wide range of social groups.
