A preposition is used to show direction, location, or time, or to introduce an object. 

Prepositions of Place: at, in, on

In general, we use:

1. AT for a POINT

2. IN for an ENCLOSED SPACE

2. IN for MONTHS, YEARS, CENTURIES and LONG PERIODS

IN

Used for unspecific times during a day, month, season, and year:

1. She always reads newspapers in the morning.

2. In the summer, we have a rainy season for three weeks.

3. The new semester will start in March.

Used to indicate a location or place:

1. She looked me directly in the eyes.

2. I am currently staying in a hotel.

3. My hometown is Los Angeles, which is in California.

Used to indicate a shape, color, or size:

1. This painting is mostly in blue.

2. The students stood in a circle.

3. This jacket comes in four different sizes.

Used to express while doing something:

1. In preparing for the final report, we revised the tone three times.

2. A catch phrase needs to be impressive in marketing a product.

Used to indicate a belief, opinion, interest, or feeling:

1. I believe in the next life.

2. We are not interested in gambling.

Used to express a surface of something:

1. I put an egg on the kitchen table.

2. The paper is on my desk.

Used to specify days and dates:

1. The garbage truck comes on Wednesdays.

2. I was born on the 14th day of June in 1988.

Used to indicate a device or machine, such as a phone or computer:

1. He is on the phone right now.

2. She has been on the computer since this morning.

3. My favorite movie will be on TV tonight.

Used to indicate a part of the body:

1. The stick hit me on my shoulder.

2. He kissed me on my cheek.

3. I wear a ring on my finger.

Used to indicate the state of something:

1. Everything in this store is on sale.

2. The building is on fire.

Used to point out specific time:

1. I will meet you at 12 p.m.

2. The bus will stop here at 5:45 p.m.

Used to indicate a place:

1. There is a party at the club house.

2. There were hundreds of people at the park.

Used to indicate an email address:

1. Please email me at [email protected].

Used to indicate an activity:

1. He laughed at my acting.

2. I am good at drawing a portrait.
