Opening Title

The Usual Suspects(1995)• Titling lasts for about 2 minutes.

includes lists of actors, and directors, producers, costume designers,

• Background is black, the darkness portrays a mysterious scene and the font is in block capitals in white, this makes it stand out.

• The writing comes from the top of the screen, in a wavy form.

The Usual Suspects(1995)The more important actors come up first during the titling sequence to show that they are more popular so therefore audiences will be interested when seeing their names. The actors names are close together which connotes that they are probably acquaintances in the film and as it as an organised crime genre it gets the audience thinking what they are going to do together.

The Usual Suspects(1995)After the more popular actors are shown, afterwards it says “Also Starring” and then even more actors are screened. This insinuates that these actors are less important in the film and therefore are shown after the main characters.

The dark background then fades away and Matches appear being lit on fire which connotes that fire and danger will be involved in this film. The titling goes away after the matches have been lit and the movie then begins.

The Godfather(1972)

Mario Puzo’s name is seen above The Godfather titling. Although he did not even direct the film, he wrote the screenplay. However his novel was released about 3 years before the film. As it was a popular book, seeing the well known Mario Puzo’s name in the titling makes the audience aware that the film is of high quality.

The titling “The Godfather” is shown for around 8 seconds, nothing else is shown which tells the audience that it is all about The Godfather and gives him a sense of importance, no one else matters. He is the centre of attention. Afterwards it gets straight into the film and no other titling is shown, This is done because now the audience have an insight on who The Godfather is in this film and it gets straight into it and gets the audience focused from the start.

The Godfather(1972)

Above the wording “father” there are strings coming out of the letters with a hand holding them like a puppet. This connotes that the this person pulls the string, he is in control and will be a main role in the film.

GoodfellasGoodfellas is shown in block capitals in the centre of the screen over a black background to make it stand out. It is also in a red colour to connote blood and gore which tells the audience that there will be violence in the film.
