For the sixth consecutive year, Studio Abba from Florence returns to the Grand Palais with the international group of artists ‘OpenArtCode’, thanks to the successful initiative, the good feeling and generosity of heart of a fellow artist, Mary Brilli.

Perfectly integrated into the Salon of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, it is with pleasure that we host the twenty-two artists of this group. This international group is remarkable for its charity work and the wealth of pictorial expression and I note with great satisfaction their loyalty to the Société des Artistes Indépendants, clearly expressing our society’s motto: «Dans l'art, la liberté est la meilleure alliée de la création originale.» (“In art, freedom is the closest ally of original creation".)

Over the years, the morphology of their art has taken on new hues. Individually of course, but also as a group. In reality, the versatile group OpenArtCode uses many different techniques, including the most avant-garde, helping to build the global vision of art in the making.

In the creative humanism of this event, we look forward to welcoming you among us, to keep the spirit of a great celebration of colour, and we hope that this Salon will be, in all respects, a great success for all of you.

Pour la 6ème année consécutive le Studio Abba de Florence se retrouve sous la célèbre verrière du Grand Palais, avec le groupe d’artistes internationaux d’OpenArtCode, et cela grâce à l'heureuse initiative, la bonne humeur et la générosité de cœur légendaires de Mary Brilli.

Parfaitement intégré au Salon de la Société des Artistes Indépendants, c’est donc avec joie que nous recevons 22 artistes de ce groupe.Entre ce groupe international, remarquable par ses actions caritatives et la richesse de ses expressions picturales, nous remarquons avec grande satisfaction, sa fidélité à la Société des Artistes Indépendants. Cela exprime bien la communauté de notre idéal: «Dans l'art, la liberté est la meilleure alliée de la création originale.»

Au fil des années la morphologie de l'art prend de nouvelles teintes. Individuellement certes, mais davantage en groupe. En réalité, l'équipe protéiforme d'OpenArtCode, laquelle utilise toutes les techniques, y compris les plus avant-garde, contribue à forger la vision mondiale de l'art en devenir.Dans l'humanisme créatif de cet événement, nous nous réjouissons de vous accueillir parmi nous, d'avoir su vous garder et dans l'esprit d'une grande fête de la couleur, nous souhaitons que ce Salon soit, sur tous les plans, une grande réussite pour tous.

Isabel Becker est née et vit à Rio de Janeiro. Elle a obtenu un diplôme en communication visuelle en 1990 et a commencé à étudier la photographie à Oxford, en Angleterre. Deux ans plus tard, elle s'est imposée comme photographe de mode et life style dans le journal brésilien O Globo, et a commencé à prendre des photos pour les catalogues de mode et les magazines publiés par Editora Abril. Sa première exposition personnelle a eu lieu en 1995, avec d'amusantes images de villes européennes. En 2000, elle a créé puis dirigé le projet d’art Photo Gallery, qui présentait le travail de célèbres photographes de Rio de Janeiro et São Paulo. En explorant différents thèmes, Isabel s'est immergée dans l'univers des épouses, des portraits de famille et des enfants. Le résultat est un ensemble d’œuvres qui s’intéressent à la relation entre le photographe et son sujet, qu'il s'agisse d'une personne, d'un paysage ou d'un objet.

Isabel Becker was born and lives in Rio de Janeiro. She received her degree in Visual Communications in 1990 and studied photography in Oxford, England. Two years later, she made her name as a fashion and lifestyle photographer in the Brazilian newspaper O Globo and started shooting pictures for fashion catalogues and magazines published by Editora Abril. In 1995, she held her first individual fine art exhibition that featured playful images of European cities. In 2000, she created and was the curator of the fine art project Photo Gallery, which displayed the work of renowned photographers from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Exploring different themes, Isabel immersed herself in the world of brides, family portraits and children. The result is a body of work that looks at the relationship created between the photographer and the subject, whether it is a person, landscape or object.

Hervé Bindefeld, né en 1965 à Paris, fut un adolescent captivé par la photographie. Il avait alors décidé de s’en éloigner car la photographie reposant sur la prise de vue instantanée ne lui permettait de jouer de transparences, surimpressions et autres distances prises avec le réel. Il deviendra médecin et laissera mûrir sa passion. Voilà des années, il reprend ses appareils reconsidérant toute l’expressivité désormais offerte par les nouvelles technologies appliquées à la photographie. Sa fibre créative l’amène à réaliser un travail de mises en scène photographiques à partir de sculptures de rue sur le thème de l’animation, de la vie. Il devient "Hv", artiste photographe avec son écriture propre et sa griffe éminemment reconnaissable. Sa touche contemporaine sur des sculptures anciennes est à la fois très émouvante et très surprenante. Suite au succès de plusieurs de ses expositions internationales, notamment à Paris, Bruxelles, Florence, Miami, Hv est devenu l’un des artistes permanents d’une galerie à Paris et d’une autre à New-York. En 2013, il a gagné le premier prix au Chianti Star Festival en Italie.

Hervé Bindefeld, born in 1965 in Paris, was already passionate about photography as an adolescent. However at that time he decided not to take it up as a professional career as he felt that photography was based on an instant shot and it was not possible to play with transparencies, overprints and other ways of moving away from reality. He subsequently became a doctor but it was years later, that he picked up his camera again, given the vast expressive possibilities that are now offered by today’s technology when applied to photography. His creative streak inspired his photographic compositions that looked at street sculptures with the themes of animation and life. At that stage of his artistic career he took on the artistic name of “ Hv,” a fine-art photographer with his own vocabulary and recognisable style. His contemporary take on antique sculptures is emotionally moving and certainly surprising. After the success of several exhibitions worldwide including Paris, Brussels, Florence, Miami, Hv’s artistic photography is available permanently in a gallery in Paris as well as one in New York. In 2013, he won first prize at the Chianti Star Festival, Italy.

En réalité, avec ses œuvres, elle reflète sa plus grande intime religiosité pour l’imagination, pour la satire et désire nous faire savourer sa critique, sans préjugés, à ce monde aussi irrationnel que complexe. Artiste éclectique, Mary Brilli mélange les genres: peinture, sculpture, dessin, travail sur soie et aussi collages peints, créations pour Hermès-Paris, installations… Son amour de l’art s’exprime également par l’écriture: poèmes et journalisme. Tels sont ses champs de création, sans oublier ses actions humanitaires: elle a été lauréate du Trophée de la Réussite au Féminin qu’elle a reçu à Paris au Ministère des Affaires étrangères en décembre 2011.

Only those who know Mary Brilli can really understand her strong artistic personality and by knowing her world, her work and her loves and passions, can we see her as a free, self-critical and unconventional artist. In reality, her works reflect her great faith in imagination and in satire and she wants the viewer to reflect on her criticism, without prejudice, of this irrational and complex world.An eclectic artist, Mary Brilli works in many genres: painting, sculpture, drawing, silk and painted collages, creations for Hermès-Paris and installations, to name just some. This love of art is also expressed in writing through poetry and journalism. This is her creative side, but her humanitarian work must not be forgotten either: indeed she received the award, Trophée de la Réussite au Féminin, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris in December 2011.

Emmanuel de Brito est un photographe né à Domont (France) en 1972. Il a obtenu son degré d'ingénieur civil à l'Université de Lyon et a ensuite étudié la chimie et la physique à Paris. Il a travaillé comme ingénieur du bâtiment et a dessiné le théâtre des Sablons à Neuilly-sur-Seine, ville dans laquelle il vit actuellement à côté de Paris. Il y a cinq ans, il s’est découvert une passion pour la photographie et il est maintenant photographe free-lance. Il prend du plaisir à redécouvrir des paysages urbains, à travers son objectif et avec sa touche minimaliste. Beaucoup de ses photos sont prises dans des villes comme New York, Paris, Venise, montrant par exemple leurs lignes d'horizon et leurs graffiti. Un autre de ses sujets récurrents est la nature qui entoure les hommes; le détail est fondamental pour son art et à travers ce détail le spectateur voit ce qu'il ne voit plus d'habitude parce que dans la routine il n'y donne pas de valeur. De Brito a été exposé en 2011 et 2012 en France et en Italie, et en 2013 il a gagné le deuxième prix au Chianti Star Festival en Italie.

Emmanuel De Brito is a photographer born in Domont (France) in 1972. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Lyon University and subsequently studied chemistry and physics in Paris. He worked as a building engineer and designed the Sablons Theatre in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris where he currently lives. Just over five years ago, De Brito became extremely passionate about photography and he now works as a freelance photographer. He takes great pleasure in rediscovering urban landscapes, through his lens with his minimalist touch. Many of Emmanuel De Brito's photos are taken in cities such New York, Paris, and Venice, showing for example, their skylines or graffiti walls. Another recurring subject is nature that surrounds human beings. Detail plays an important role in his photography and through this detail the viewer sees what he had become blind to as it had become part of daily routine and its value was no longer be appreciated. De Brito has participated in group exhibitions in 2011 and 2012 in France and Italy and in 2013 he won second prize at the Chianti Star Festival, Italy.

Loes de Haan est une artiste hollandaise célèbre avec un curriculum long et impressionnant dans toutes sortes d’arts: peinture, techniques mixtes sur papier, peintures murales, conception graphique et scénographie. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans des expositions internationales et ses poèmes ont également été publiés. Elle s’est aussi consacrée aux personnes qui souffrent de toutes sortes d'abus. Pour cette raison, elle a choisi de passer deux ans sur un projet humanitaire pour terminer sa carrière de professeur d’arts plastiques dans un lycée. Le but de ce projet est d'expliquer la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme à travers 5 toiles et 15 cartons. Ces supports ont déjà été exposés en Espagne, en Italie et aux Pays-Bas et ils continueront à voyager aussi longtemps que nécessaire pour venir en aide aux personnes abusées. Les réactions que ce projet d'art produit sont très enrichissantes: aux Pays-Bas, des groupes d’élèves du secondaire ont discuté les sujets et participé activement au projet. Loes souhaite que sa peinture touche le cœur des gens partout dans le monde, parce que l'art est un langage universel qui n’a pas besoin de mots.

Loes de Haan is a well-known Dutch artist with a long and respected curriculum in a variety of art techinques including painting, mixed media on paper, murals, graphic design and theatre design. She has had international exhibitions and her poetry has been published. She has also dedicated herself to people who suffer from abuse. For this reason, she chose to work on a two-year human rights project after she changed her profession from being a high school teacher of the arts. Through five of her canvases and fifteen works on board that have already been exhibited in Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, this project defends the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The artist hopes that the artworks can continue to be exhibited as long as they can help these abused sufferers. The reactions that this art project evokes are very rewarding for the artist, for example as a result of seeing her work, groups of high school students in The Netherlands have actively participated in this project. Loes wants her painting to reach the hearts of people everywhere, as she considers art as a universal language that speaks without words.

Christine Drummond est née et a grandi au Brésil. Elle a suivi sa formation au lycée français de Rio et se considère comme une véritable "carioca", c'est-à-dire comme une personne qui naît et grandit à Rio de Janeiro. Une "carioca" profite de la vie, croit en son avenir, est optimiste et Christine transmet ces éléments dans sa peinture. En 1999, elle déménage aux États-Unis où elle commence à peindre, au pinceau mais sans texture. Les résultats révèlent des œuvres extrêmement colorées qui représentent son pays natal. En 2004, elle visite une exposition des travaux du professeur Ablade Glover. Cela l'aide à définir son style et à lui donner le sens de la liberté. Avec ses traits de couteau audacieux, elle crée de la texture qui à son tour crée des formes et des couleurs s'animant sur la toile. Aujourd'hui, le travail artistique de Christine Drummond est exposé dans le monde entier dans des expositions collectives et personnelles, dont récemment avec le groupe OpenArtCode au Salon des Artistes Indépendants au Grand Palais de Paris en 2010-2012 ou en solo à la Galerie Butler Goode à Sydney en Australie. Elle a gagné le prix du concours GemlucArt à Monaco en 2011. Ce prix a consisté en une exposition personnelle à la Galerie Ribolzi à Monaco en 2012, exposition qui a été couronnée de succès.

Christine Drummond was born and raised in Brazil. She received her formative education at the French Lycée in Rio and sees herself a true “carioca”, meaning a person born and raised in Rio de Janeiro. A “carioca” enjoys life, has faith in the future and is an optimist and she brings these characteristics into her paintings. In 1999, she moved to the US and started painting using brushes but with no texture, the results revealed extremely colourful artworks that always depicted her native country. In 2004, she saw a display of Professor Ablade Glover’s work and this helped her to define her style and gave her a sense of freedom. With the bold strokes of her palette knife, she creates texture that in turn creates shapes and colours that become alive on her canvas. Today, Christine Drummond’s artworks are shown worldwide in collective and personal exhibitions, most recently with OpenArtCode group in the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in the Grand Palais, Paris in 2010-2012, and the solo exhibition at the Butler Goode Gallery in Sydney, Australia. Christine won the Prix du Concours at GemlucArt, Monaco 2011 and the prize was a subsequent, extremely successful, solo exhibition held at Gallery Ribolzi in Monte Carlo in 2012.

Sharina Gumbs, également connue sous le nom de Peepsqueek, est née à Aruba. Elle a émigré aux Pays-Bas à l'âge de sept ans et a grandi dans ce pays étranger où elle s’est toujours sentie comme en visite, n’attendant que de retourner chez elle. Son père était resté à Aruba avec son épouse et sa famille et il se passera plus de 13 ans avant qu'elle ne le revoie. Grandir sans père a fait d'elle une personne réfléchie, une rêveuse, en perpétuelle exploration du sens de l'amour, de la famille, de l'identité et des relations. Incapable, parce qu’une enfant, d'exprimer ses émotions en mots, elle a trouvé une échappatoire dans le dessin et l'écriture. Son objectif principal en tant qu'artiste est de voir et de montrer les gens tels qu'ils sont, avec son cœur et sans les juger. Elle cherche un langage universel à travers l'art, une langue qui est capable d'unir les personnes. Son intérêt pour l’humain l’a conduite à étudier les sciences du comportement et à son métier initial de travailleur social. Ce n'est qu’à l’approche de la quarantaine qu’elle s’est autorisée à libérer l'artiste qui était en elle. En est résulté son travail abstrait qui est une réflexion très dynamique et intuitive sur sa propre identité.

Sharina Gumbs, also known as Peepsqueek, was born in Aruba. She emigrated to the Netherlands at the age of seven and grew up in what felt to her a foreign country where she felt like a visitor, and she always longed to return home. Her father had remained in Aruba with his wife and family and it would take thirteen more years before she saw him again. Growing up without a father made her into into a thinker and a wonderer and she has always explored the meaning of love, family, identity and relationships. Unable to express her emotions in spoken words as a child, she found an escape in drawing and writing. Her main purpose as an artist is to see and show people as they are, from the heart, without judging them. She searches for a universal language through art, a language which is able to unite people. Sharina’s interest in the human character led to her study behavioural science and to her initial profession as a social worker. It was not until her early forties that she allowed herself to unleash the artist within and as a result, her abstract art is a very dynamic and intuitive reflection on her own being.

Née en 1955 à Paris, Evelyne Huet est mathématicienne de formation. Elle a également étudié l’anthropologie. Fortement imprégnée des cultures et des arts des sociétés dites primitives, sa peinture parle depuis longtemps des femmes et des petites filles, et en particulier de leur courage face aux situations de violences et aux conditions d'existence extrêmement difficiles qu'elles sont très nombreuses à subir un peu partout dans le monde, à des degrés divers. Celles qu’elle peint ne se vivent pas comme des victimes. Elles ne sont jamais résignées et beaucoup sont même en résistance mentale active. Elle s’attache à simplifier leur représentation à l’extrême, par envie d’alléger la lecture de ses toiles et surtout d’éviter le registre du pathos et de l’explicatif tout en donnant à voir ce qui lui semble être essentiel.Membre du groupe d’artistes internationaux OpenArtCode, Evelyne Huet vit à Paris et expose régulièrement seule ou en groupe en France et à l’étranger (en Italie, Espagne, en Israël et en Chine). Elle est aussi l’une des artistes de la Galerie Teodora à Paris.

Born in 1955 in Paris, Evelyne Huet is a mathematician by training. She has also studied anthropology. Strongly influenced by the cultures and arts of societies seen as primitive, her paintings have long sought to depict women and girls and in particular, the courage they display in the face of violent situations and extremely difficult living conditions many of them have to confront to varying degrees. The women she paints do not see themselves as victims and never resign themselves to their fate, on the contrary many actively challenge their circumstances from within.She endeavours to simplify her representations to the extreme to provide a “lighter” reading of her paintings and most importantly to avoid evoking pathos and having to ‘explain’ her work, whilst aiming to show only what she believes to be essential. A member of the OpenArtCode group of international artists, Evelyne lives in Paris and her paintings are regularly displayed in solo and group shows in France and abroad (Italy, Spain, Israel and China). She is also one of the artists of the Galerie Teodora, Paris.

Sumio Inoue est né en 1948 à Tokyo, au Japon. Il a étudié les techniques de la photographie à l’Académie du Design de Tokyo de 1968 à 1970 puis au Centre du Design du Japon de 1970 à 1974. Il a commencé sa carrière dans la photographie commerciale, avant de passer à la photographie artistique en 1990. Sumio vit et travaille à New York mais passe une partie de l’année à Tokyo. Ces dernières années, il a soigneusement développé une série appelée Silenzioso: images imprimées sur du papier de riz fait-main, un procédé qui prend plusieurs mois. Intérieurs d’église, monuments importants, villes et paysages urbains sont imprimés avec une infinité de nuances et d’ombres monochromes très intenses. Donner à voir quelque chose là où il n’y a rien à voir, en dévoilant et en évoquant des espaces inconnus avec un pathos antique destiné à stimuler l'imagination du spectateur, tels sont les objectifs essentiels du travail de Sumio. Il a présenté ses œuvres à Tokyo, New York, Londres, Paris, Deauville, Florence, Barcelone, en Grèce et au Mexique. Il est membre du groupe OpenArtCode et a participé aux WorldArtVision Cancun et Barcelona. En 2007, Sumio a gagné le premier prix de la photographie à la Biennale de Florence et il a remporté le Prix du Jury au GemlucArt à Monaco en 2009.

Sumio Inoue was born in 1948 in Tokyo, Japan. He studied photographic techniques at Tokyo Design Academy from 1968 to 1970 and at the Japan Design Center from 1970 to 1974. He began his career working in commercial photography and in 1990 changed to artistic photography. He lives and works in New York but still spends part of the year in Tokyo. Inoue has spent the past years carefully developing a series called Silenzioso: images printed on handmade rice paper, a process that takes several months. Church interiors, important monuments, town and cityscapes are printed with intensified focus and in infinitely monochromatic shades and shadows. To see something where nothing can be seen, uncovering and evoking unknown spaces with an antique pathos and to provoke one’s imagination, are the primary goals of Sumio’s art. He has had successful exhibitions in Tokyo, New York, London, Paris, Deauville, Florence, Barcelona, Greece and Mexico. He is a member of the OpenArtCode group and also participated in WorldArtVision Cancun and Barcelona. In 2007, Sumio won the first prize for Photography at the Florence Biennale and won the Prix du Jury at GemlucArt, Monaco 2009.

L’œuvre jaillit de tout ce qui existe: la communication, le rire, le toucher, la tension, le vol, le paysage, les espaces et les choses sacrées." Maz Jackson vit et peint à Norfolk au Royaume-Uni. Suivant les traditions du XVe siècle de Cennino Cennini, elle traduit sa vision artistique en pigments minéraux naturels mélangés avec du jaune d'œuf et de l’eau distillée. Elle étend cette détrempe à l'œuf sur des panneaux de chêne entre les formes dorées de feuilles d'or et ce procédé de réalisation lui prend souvent deux ou trois ans pour finaliser une œuvre. Elle a gagné de nombreux prix et est exposée et collectionnée dans des musées en Grande-Bretagne, en Europe, aux États-Unis, en Chine, au Japon et au Mexique. Son œuvre continue à évoluer sous différentes formes: détrempe à l'œuf, gravure et livres uniques faits à la main.

Following the methods of the 15th century painter Cennino Cennini, she depicts her artistic vision in ground mineral pigments together with egg yolk and distilled water. The tempera is laid down on gessoed oak panels between forms in gold leaf and a work can often take up to two or three years to complete. Her award-winning art has been exhibited and collected in museums in Great Britain, Europe, USA, China, Japan and Mexico. Her imagery continues to evolve in the various art forms: tempera, prints and in unique hand-made books.

Le travail de l'artiste aux multiples facettes, Margaret LaBounty, reflète le continuum de la vie et l'exploration spirituelle du temps et des lieux. La technique artistique unique de LaBounty est une technique de caméléon dans une synthèse de couleurs exquises et de matières brutes, évocatrice d'espaces sereins et des cycles naturels de l'eau, l’air, la terre, le feu-soleil, la lune et les étoiles. A partir des canyons de roche rouge du Sud-Ouest des États-Unis, en passant par le soleil éternel des Îles Hawaii, la voie créative de LaBounty forme comme un grand cercle jusqu’aux sommets enneigés du Colorado. Peut-être mieux connu par ses sculptures à la main et ses terres cuites, son travail est construit à partir de matériaux naturels comme l'argile, le bois, le cactus, la pierre, les métaux et les chaleureux tons de laiton et de cuivre. "Marie jette l'encre de Chine sur la toile où la tache devient visage pour jouer avec l'inconscient et là, sa spontanéité a gagné le pari de l'équilibre"(Michel Picard). Elle a remporté le prix Artist of UNESCO en 2011 et a eu des expositions collectives et personnelles en Italie et en France.

George Oommen is a Boston-based, Harvard-educated architect and painter whose art is inspired by the memories of a childhood spent in the spice coast of Kerala in India. His landscapes take viewers on enchanted journeys, reflecting the verdant views, serene waterways and sun-drenched skies of Kerala. Some of these journeys are mystical, such as the collection entitled “Sacred Spaces Within You.” These abstract compositions are inspired by Indian temples “where pilgrims are conveyed from secular spaces to the inner sanctum of one’s spiritual self.” Oommen’s art is very versatile. It is tactile, emotional, spiritual and as sensual as the vivid colours of the silk saris that have influenced his Kanjeevaram series. His artistic explorations have created a unique aesthetic style that mirrors the monsoon and the rain-swept visuals of his imagined homeland. Oommen has had various retrospective, solo and collective shows in the USA and in Russia and in February 2014, the Sunaparanta Goa Centre of Art in India will be hosting Oommen in a solo show.

The painter Sara Palleria was born in Rome, where she still lives and works. She received her degree in Education Sciences and she continues to work in this research field parallel to her artistic career, with particular reference to the world of colour linked to the psychology of emotions. She collaborates with various institutions in the visual arts sector and runs education courses on images and colour laboratories. She loves to paint all that “the eye thinks it sees”. “The crossing of colour, alternating between heaven and earth, between light and dark ... the expression of colours and materials ... all that seems to be... and instead becomes something else, where colours and the earth slip away and cling to uncertain boundaries in the nature of the underlying human journey”. Minor events of daily life are the source of inspiration for the Norwegian artist, Solveig M. Skogseide, to capture emotions and feelings on the canvas. Hence, human relationships are often a theme that she investigates in her work. Symbols such as the Circle of Life, the Tree of Life and the beauty of hope for the future, belonging and love, come across in her canvases. The larger concepts and events of the world also have an impact – in particular, symbols related to caring for the planet are often present. She grew up in a very creative family, where music was of great importance. The result is that she often thinks of creating a painting in the same way as composing music. Ce processus est l’élément majeur des créations de René van der Bruggen et le concept de chaque dessin apparaît en même temps que le dessin évolue. The Dutch artist, René van der Bruggen, Oss, 1951, studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming, Tilburg, and at the Kunstacademie in Kampen. He graduated as a sculptor, but drawing has always been an important discipline for him. His drawings were never studies for his sculptures, but were autonomous. As such, they became an independent and indispensable part of his work.After having worked several years as an architectural designer, when drawing played a predominantly supportive role for him, René started drawing again and in a short period of time he developed a very personal and authentic style. His technique, use of materials and formats are rather unusual. He uses oil sticks and oil pastels but never uses colour as painters generally do. Each work has a definitive character and is the result of an intensive process of building and scratching. This process remains the most important and the concept of every drawing manifests itself as the drawing evolves. Each work is a world of its own: with its own secrets, it is intuitive and corresponds to its own logic. It is the answer to a question it was asking itself. An answer that is only to be found by drawing.

Max Werner was born in Ghent, Belgium and he studied at the Slade Schoool of Art in London. He taught printmaking in the UK and worked in the Art House Gallery in Buenos Aires, Argentina and currently resides in the USA. Often triggered by a simple observation of his immediate environment such as landscapes, Max Werner seems to love the challenge of an unusual composition, and the capturing of the diversity of light in the various places he travels to. Perhaps to get a deeper understanding of his work, it helps to know that Magritte is one of Werner’s favourite artists. Werner generally paints in his studio a few weeks after having seen his subject matter, using sketches and photos, but never relying on recorded reality. The end result is an image which evokes a mood, and which conveys what the artist felt at the time, rather than a faithful representation of the place described. This in turn invites the viewer to reflect on what it expresses.
