Patterns of Citation

• Summary

– It is citing a shortened version of the original text that is written using your own words

• Paraphrase

– Contrasted to summary, it is explaining the meaning of the text you are referring to. It may exceed the number of words of the alluded text.

• Short Direct Quotation

– It is copying the exact words of a part of the original author’s ideas. It should not exceed 40 words.

• Long Direct Quotation

– It is copying the exact words of a larger part of the original author’s ideas. It should not exceed 100 words. Under APA, the limit is eight lines and the copied sentences should be placed at the center of the page with no indention.

The professional socialization of nursing is associated with the specializedknowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and norms needed to perform the professional role.Unlike other professions, nursing has three educational routes leading to eligibility for thelicensing exam and becoming a registered nurse. This has created controversy within theprofession and confusion for the public. At the core of the controversy over level of entry intoprofessional nursing is the definition of profession. Educational preparation at thebaccalaureate level provides a broader education to better address the body of knowledge.Although nursing meets each of the criteria to some extent, some more factors are moreadequately addressed against nursing as a profession. The autonomous practice of nursinghas been a source of political activism on behalf of nurses. Whether nursing has a sufficientlydeveloped, unique body of knowledge is also in dispute.
