VITAMIN-A PROPHYLAXIS:

Th is p rogramme was launched by the min i s t ry o f hea l th o f fami ly we l fa re in 1970 on the bas i s o f techno logy deve loped a t na t iona l i ns t i tu te o f nut r i t i on a t Hyderabad.

Prophylaxis Against Nutritional Anaemia

India has probably the high prevalence of nutritional anaemia in women & children.

Iron deficiency is seen in almost 50% of children below the age of 5 yrs & 50% of women during their reproductive life.

Govt. of India launched National program for the prevention of nutritional anaemia during the 4th 5yr plan.

• This program consist of distribution of iron & folic acid Tabs to the pregnant women & young children.

• Mother and child health centres in rural areas; ICDS (Integrated Child Develop Service Scheme projects are engaged in the implementation of this program.

Objectives

The programme aim at significantly using

the prevalence and incidence of anaemia in women in reproductive age group, especially pregnant & lactating women; & pre-school children.

Special objectives are;To asses the baseline prevalence of

nutritional anaemia in mothers & young children through estimation of hb levels.

To put the mother & children with low Hb levels( less than 10g and less than 8g respectively) on anti-anaemia reaction.

To put the mother with Hb level more than 10g/dl and children with Hb more than 8g/dl on the prophylaxis programme.

To monitor continuously the quality of tablets; distribution & consumption of the supplements.

To assess periodically the hb levels of the beneficiaries.

To motivate the mothers to consume the tablets through relevant nutrition education (and to give their children also).

BeneficiariesThe scheme beneficiaries are children in 1-5yrs

of age; pregnant and nursing mothers, female acceptor of terminal methods of family planning and IUDs.

The target beneficiaries of the scheme are 50% of total pregnant and nursing mothers & 25% of total women acceptors of terminal and IUDs.

The target child population is 50% of total population in age group of 1-5 yrs.

Activities

The program focuses on the following activities:

Promotion of regular consumption of foods rich in iron.

Supply of iron and foliate supplements in the form of tablets ( folifer tablets ) to the target group.

Identification and reaction of severely anaemic cases.

The recommended daily dosage of iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets is as follows: Adult women : 60mg elemental

iron + 0.5mg folic acid. Children acid : 20mg elemental

iron + 0.1mg folic acid.

Organisation

The program is implemented through the PHCs and its sub-centres. The multipurpose worker female and other Para-medics in the PHCs are responsible for the distribution of IFA tablets (adult and paediatric doses) to beneficiaries.

The functionaries of ICDs scheme assist in

implement of programme.
