OWL AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY OWL stands for Online Writing Lab It is a website from Purdue University where

students can find information about the different types of writing

Some examples are: MLA, APA, Citing books, magazines, textbooks, etc.

If you click on MLA, for example, the website explains to the student what exactly MLA is and gives numerous examples on how to cite anything in that format. Same for APA, the website gives plenty of examples on how to cite anything in that format.

This website will come in handy for this assignment because we have to cite all of our sources in APA format.

On the left hand side of the website is where you are able to access the different formats.

This website is very easy to navigate.

MY PERSONAL REFLECTION FOR OWL I have used OWL several

times when working on papers for school that need to be cited properly

I can always count on this website because they give so many different kinds of examples on how to cite different sources

I would recommend this site for anyone that needs help with citing sources for a paper or anything school related You can access OWL from

Purdue’s website under Academics. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

READING ROCKETS

Reading Rockets is a website that deals with teaching kids how to read and helping students who struggle with reading comprehension.

This website is full of helpful information! For example, on the left side of the website, you’ll find different strategies and ways to help students with reading.

There are sections of the website for teachers, parents, principals, and librarians.

This website also contains a lot of reading resources (also located on the left side of the website).

READING ROCKETS CONTINUED To the right is a screen

shot of what the main page for Reading Rockets looks like.

You can be put on their email list to get information.

There are FAQs on the website dealing with real life people and their student’s reading problems, etc.

You can also track your child/student’s progress on this website.

MY PERSONAL REFLECTION ON READING ROCKETS

I really liked this website. Reading Comprehension and Reading in general do not come easily to most students so I think that this is a great way to help them with their struggles.

If they had this program when I was in elementary school it would have been great because I have always struggled with Reading Comprehension. I think that this would be a very effective tool in the classroom and I just might use it when I become a teacher!

TURNITIN.COM Turnitin.com is probably one of the best

resources a secondary teacher can have. It is a website that allows students to log into

an account (usually the teacher sets up the program so they are able to use it) and turn in their papers to be checked for plagiarism.

Plagiarism is illegal and can cost students to fail classes if they just copy and paste information that is not theirs.

After the student turns in their papers, they immediately can see what percentage of their paper was plagiarized.

TURNITIN.COM CONTINUED To the right is a

screen shot of the main page.

As you can see plagiarism is a big deal because it is on the main page of the website!

It is important for teachers to explain to their students why plagiarism is harmful and not good for their careers.

MY PERSONAL REFLECTION ON TURNITIN.COM

I had a teacher in High School and a Professor at Purdue use Turnitin.com for papers and PowerPoints.

I think that this is a very effect way for teachers to make their students aware of writing information they find in their own words.

I will be an elementary teacher so I most likely will not use this but I advise any secondary teacher to use this website.

MY CONCLUSION Those websites were my

favorite websites because they are so useful to teachers. Reading is very important and students that struggle should get help in effective ways.

OWL will be most useful to high school and college students as they write papers. I’ve used it and it is very effective.

Plagiarism is illegal and students should be aware and more conscious about what they are writing and making sure that they are not using other’s information.
