Motivating the unmotivated student

I don’t have to if I don’t want to!

This class is boring!

When am I ever going to use that!

How come you gave me an F!

I’ll come, but you can’t make me do anything!

If he doesn’t have to, then I don’t either!

That’s not fair!

This is stupid!

You’ve never heard these before…

Unmotivated? What does that mean? Does he/she do nothing…?

Or does it mean "how to get him/her to do what we want him/her to do...?"

Compliance vs. engagement

Why?

What reasons lead students to not be “motivated”

to do their work?

Willingness to accept responsibility…

Gut check question…

If kids had the choice, would they still come to your class?

Who is doing more work in your classroom… ?

Who is working harder in your classroom, you, or the students…?

If you are absent, can the class go on or will it come to a grinding halt…?

Are you the sole possessor of knowledge and information, or do you facilitate a learning culture where knowledge and information are shared…?

Which better describes you and the culture within your classroom?

Some kids don't want to learn because they don't feel

they are able to learn...

Help them change their mindset & get learning!

EXTRINSIC VS. INTRINSIC MOTIVATION…

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Autonomy, mastery and purpose…

What about grades?

Do grades motivate kids?

If grades are the only thing that will motivate a kid, is that a good or a bad thing?

What happens when grades don’t motivate? Is that a good or a bad thing?

So, what works?

For the record, putting technology in the hands of every student in America while using the same traditional

approaches to instruction will only provide a short term boost to motivation.

Technology is NOT the silver bullet to motivating students.
