Thinking Routines TITLE: Connect – Extend Challenge EXPLANATION: In my Unit I am presenting a cultural topic, Thanksgiving, together with Art and Math issues (colours and geometry). As the kids are quite young, 2 nd of Primary, and they do not have a lot of vocabulary or expressions in TL, this activity is perfect to see what they understood of Thanksgiving concept and adjust the following lessons. Actually this routine allows seeing if the pupils understood the meaning of this holiday and so they are ready to explain how and why they would celebrate it in their country or if more activities are necessary to make them understand Thanksgiving core concepts. RESOURCES: A big class chart on the wall Postits Postits of a different colour with the expression “I am thankful for… “ written on them 1 piece of paper per HOW ARE YOU GOING TO USE IT? The activity is going to last 2 lessons. In the first one a big class chart is presented to students. The class chart has 3 columns with the following questions to guide students’ reasoning. 1. Connect: Before this unit, what did you know about Thanksgiving? When and to whom did you say “thank you”? 2. Extend: What new ideas have you learnt? Did you like the idea to have a special day to say thanks? What are you thankful for? 3. Challenge: What is still unclear? Any questions? The pupils have to write an answer to each question using the postit and hang it on the right columns. The question “What I am thankful for” will be answered on different postits, as it is related to the inner message of the unit, understand how grateful we should be for everything we have. Once this activity is ended, the teacher asks them to think how they would celebrate Thanksgiving in their own city. Each group has to produce a draw and/or a small text (according to their English level) and hang it on the Extend Column. The following lesson, the second column will be used again as the students will write on their postcards their “I am thankful for…” messages.
