• Facilitates the development of self-assessment (reflection) in learning

• Promotes peer assessment and tutor dialogue around learning

• Helps define good performance (goals criteria, expected standards)

• Closes the gap between current and desired performance

• Delivers high-quality information to students about their learning

• Encourages positive motivational beliefs and self-esteem

• Helps teachers shape the teaching
