DESCRIPTION

About MEEP: The Mapping Educational Ecosystems Project aims to help solve one of today’s biggest challenges — how to build learning institutions that work for people at all stages of life, from birth until natural death. We are a community-initiative that promotes holistic learning and educational transformation. About MEEP’s Community Learning Labs: All our events are designed to welcome diverse learners and celebrate educators from our community’s educational ecosystem. Our first community learning lab, in June 2014, focused on ‘Sensing the Present,’ asking where is learning happening in our community, and where do we want and need it to happen? Our second lab, ‘Mapping Education’s Future,’ explores how people are shaping education to meet the needs of humans and our living planet while incorporating new developments in technology and neuroscience into everyday learning.

YouMap: Personal MappingGoal: Reflect on Your learning Experiences & find Your first team. You and your learning experiences are the point of reference for our mapping techniques.

0. (5m) Framing! Let’s connect our personal stories of learning to our community’s educational ecosystem.1. (2m) Team Up! Form a team of 4 people.2. (10m) You! Use the sheet of paper to map your life as a learner.

● Who are you as a learner & teacher?● What have been the sources of learning & unlearning in your life?● Where do you want learning to happen?

3. (25m) Us! Form a learning community.● What do you want to share about your personal map?● What do you learn when you look at each others’ maps?● What do you want to add to your life as learner?

4. (10m) Harvest! Select 3-5 insights of the team & record those insights on stickies. Appoint someone to present those insights to the larger community.5. (10-15m: around 1.5m per group) Share!

● Share with others: What does the team wish to share with the larger community?● Post your team’s insights on the AFFINITY map (at the end of the day, we’ll revisit our insights.

You!

what are the human needs?

are these needs being met?

Page 8: MEEP Community Learning Lab - Sensing the Present

Life Cycle MappingGoal: Map human needs across the human life cycle.

0. (10m) Framing! What are the human needs of people living in the Bay Area? Are these needs being met by the current education system? Can they be met by the developing educational ecosystem? 1. (2m) Team Up! Form a new team of 4 people.2. (10m) You-squared!

● Where are you and your family in the human life cycle, and what your needs? ● What are the roles of personal, pragmatic, and community education in your life?● Are your learning needs being met by the current education system?

3. (20m) Us! Form a learning community.● What do you want to share about yourself in the human life cycle?● How do you see your needs changing in the next 10, 20, 30 years, etc.?● How can our educational ecosystem better meet your needs from birth until natural death?

4. (15m) Harvest! ● Identify 5 learning needs that either are most important for your groups and your learning

community (e.g. becoming a capable professional), or give a unique perspective on learning (e.g. reintegrating incarcerated individuals back into the community)

● In addition to that, identify 1-2-3 insights on the learning community you want to share with the group

● Appoint someone to present your team’s insights to the whole group.

Page 9: MEEP Community Learning Lab - Sensing the Present

1,2,3 Community ReflectionGOALs: Reflect On Our Process & learning; Define the Educational Ecosystem based on needs & places for holistic learning.

1. (20m, around 4m per group) Share! ● Each team’s Harvester shares five needs identified by the group and posts them on the LIFE CYCLE

map.● After that, each team’s Harvester shares 1, 2, 3+ insights that are put on the AFFINITY map.

2. (10m) Connect & Reflect!● What do our insights and our LIFE CYCLE map say about our educational ecosystem?● What needs are being met? Which ones aren’t?● Where are the gaps in our current educational system?

Learning happens here! Wat Mongkolratanaram is Berkeley’s

Thai Cultural Center & Temple. It offers language classes, youth

services, & spiritual instruction.

Learning happens here! Berkeley Public Library’s South Branch

lends magazines, books, tools, & computers. It offers family literacy

classes & hosts a teen room & community meeting room.

Learning happens here! The MLK Youth Services Center provides academic tutoring, leadership development, & violence prevention training.

Learning happens here! At Berkeley’s Grove Park, people learn tennis & practice softball.

Spatial Mapping: one block’s learning ecosystem.

Page 12: MEEP Community Learning Lab - Sensing the Present

Spatial MappingGoals: Visualize Our educational ecosystem in real Space! Connect our Places of learning to human needs in the Bay Area.

0. (5m) Frame! 1. (2m) Team Up! Form a new team of 4 people.2. (15m) Demo! Marina Kukso demonstrates how communities are using LocalWiki to share knowledge and information. 3. (10m) You!

● What is one or more real place(s) for learning that you want to represent on the physical map of our community's educational ecosystem? This place might exist in your neighborhood or be your workplace.

● What learning needs does this place meet in our community?● If you were a tour guide, what would you want to show and tell about that place?

4. (20m) Us! Share your places for learning with your team and create a collective physical map.● Introduce your place(s) for learning to your team. Mark them on the map if possible. ● How might we translate this information into LocalWiki?

○ Information that is already in the group - let’s share it! At least three options: 1. each group member types their information into LocalWiki after today, 2. the group appoints one person to type all this information, or 3. you send us emails with all information they would like for us to put online.

○ What might we do beyond that? (Use LocalWiki with your class, upload photos, create and maintain an account for entries, etc.)

5. (10m) Harvest! Select 3-5 places for learning that you want to place back on the LIFE CYCLE map.● What are your team’s places of learning?● Where are they on the spatial map?● How do your team’s places of learning relate to the needs that you identified in the human life cycle?

Create team stickies that have: (1) name of learning places (2) how each site addresses human needs.● How do you want to show and tell your team’s places of learning?

6. (30m) Share! Post your places of learning back on the LIFE CYCLE map with the corresponding needs that it addresses. Let’s look for connections.

● What needs are being met by the existing places of learning that were posted on the life cycle map?● What needs are still not met by the existing places of learning? What gaps exist?

affinity mapping

GOAL: Find our points of unity, map the near future

0. Frame! Let’s find our points of unity and form natural partnerships to bring a holistic educational ecosystem into being.1. (30m) Us! Break into groups of 5-7 people (three groups in total)

● What were your key insights from…○ personal mapping?○ life cycle mapping?○ spatial mapping?

● Given these insights, what are your next steps? What are the natural partnerships you saw in the room today? With whom do you want to team up in the near future?

● In what way can we make the education ecosystem more holistic for all learners?2. (10m) Harvest! Appoint a Harvester to share your team’s insights before the whole group.

● Are there themes we share? ● What are our points of unity? ● What are our unique insights & questions?

3. (20m) Planting seeds! Share your team’s insights before the whole group.

Closing: Moving Forward TogetherGoal: Share personal Stories of Reflection, Critique, and Celebration

1. (5m) Moving Forward! What are MEEP’s natural next steps?● Platform - open space for people to meet their needs & goals as educators● Website - space for curriculum, reflection (not yet a wiki)● Meetup - meep on the social web● Smart dinner parties - idea for gathering educators together● Next labs - future mapping + empathy mapping (September) - we’ll see afterwards!● Email survey for insights & critiques to improve MEEP● LocalWiki - entering information into global platform for LocalWiki

2. (20m) Reflection, Critique, & Celebration ● What did you gain from today’s community learning lab?● What suggestions do you have to strengthen MEEP’s community learning labs?

3. (5m) Hug, high five, & handshake for educational transformation!● Introduce yourself to someone new or newish.● Ask if they’re open to a hug, high five, or handshake.● Close the day!

So long, and thanks for all the smarts!
