Technology and MeMasako Furutani

A personal timeline of educational technology

Overview

My name is Masako Furutani.I started school in 1993 in Honolulu.I graduated from high school in 2007

in Honolulu. I first went to college at the University

of Hawaii, Manoa in 2007.When I finish my degree, I hope to

become an elementary education teacher.

My Definition of Educational Technology

“…the tools and techniques that will enable students to think critically by multisensory simulation which will then enable them to apply those skills to meet the series of

challenges they will face in the real-world.”

Kindergarten Technology

• No computers were used in the classrooms

• Televisions were shared amongst classrooms (Teachers had to roll in TVs that were on carts). They were big and bulky too!

• I still remember student IDs were still manually laminated with the student picture and not printed like how they are today

High School Technology

• Each teacher had their personal computers in their classroom

• Students could go to the library or “tech labs” which had a classroom with only computers

• Some teachers used TVs, overhead projectors, and/or SMART boards to teach

College Technology

• Professors and students use Laulima • Most students have their own personal

laptop• Online courses are available like ETEC in

which students don’t even have to go to class!

• People can use their cell phones to access the internet to easily check their e-mail

• ETEC uses technologies like Ning, Elluminate, Laulima and etc!

A vivid technology learning experience

• The usage of SMART boards at my high school really stunned me

• Realized that technology has really gone far and enabled teachers to be equipped with tools that help students learn more efficiently and clearly

A technology I want to use in my classroom

• In my classroom, I would like to use a SMART board.

• Watch this cool video to learn more about SMART boards! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U05WeXPGlk

My vision of the classroom of the future

I want a virtual class pet in my future classroom.

Everyday, a student can be responsible to

take care of the pet online!

A challenge for teaching

A challenge is teaching students to be patient. In this world where people can

get information and everything else in an instant (instant gratification), it is hard for students to be patient. In addition, I want students to appreciate what they

have and have them understand how privileged they are to be able to access the technology that is available to them today.

Words of Wisdom

“A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes

itself to light the way for others.” –Anonymous
