DESCRIPTION
Presentation by Jon Haeber at the MA SHRAB Conference of his Public History Master's Thesis project on Mapping, Place and the Holyoke History Walk
Citation preview
THE HOLYOKE HISTORY WALK Jonathan Haeber Public History, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
I arrived here interested in…
1. The study of the landscape and its patterns
Informed by landscape thinkers and artists like J.B. Jackson, Edward Burtynsky, and Bill Owens
2. Examination of consumption through the lens of the built environment
3. The temporal transitions in space shaped by historical events
Why Holyoke?
Fully planned by the Boston Associates – a pre-built city template
Its paper manufacturing wealth meant it eventually held more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the U.S.
Space was intensely divided by class
The city was also functionally divided
