A French Course presented by
Gabrielle Guichard
based upon the book by J. H. P. Brown
Modern Swimming
I had created this method for pupils who had trouble learning vocabulary.
The academic experts did not like it for two reasons:
the choice of the texts: it is a method that works better with instruction manuals or other non-academic books
It made the assessment difficult
It works quite simply
Within the original text, some English words are replaced with their French translation.
You understand them thanks to the context. You learn them easily, because they appear
several times. At the end of the book, you are able to read whole
pages in French.
Give it a try right now! The preface alone is worth it (the book was first
published in 1916). The author -out of modesty or good sense- gives a
lesson about artificial respiration in the last chapter. Let's start!
PREFACE
The annual toll paid à Neptune in valuable lives should être a sufficient incentive for every one to learn how to nager. Every enfant above the age of five ans, as well as chaque adult, should être perfectly at home dans the water.
The teaching de swimming should être made compulsory in chaque school and a perfect knowledge de it exacted de all qui have the management de vessels, as well as de ceux employed thereon.
As a preventative of disease as well as an up-builder of the corps and a moulder of form it stands sans a rival parmi all the systems devised pour the purpose of physical care et perfection. It is likewise a powerful agent pour le development of the mind and will, as likewise the suppleness, l'activité and la précision of the body in its action. The delicate in constitution, as also the deformed, will find in it a genuine panacée.
The approprié place pour its exercise is in the open and not in une piscine. The reason est, or should être, perfectly plain to quelqu'un who will give the matter a little thought. Disease est most readily communicated through la skin. At the risk of being considered censorious je would advise reflection avant de patronizing any kind of piscine. Qui would wash dans the same bath-tub at the same time avec another personne, même though there were a good current de fresh, clean eau running through it all the time? What est la différence, even though the piscine est large? The swarms of êtres humains that employ them at the same time make le danger or the unpleasantness of the thought nonetheless. Moreover, free, open air and not wholly or partly vitiated air est absolutely essentiel to obtain value from the exercise.
That's it!Without even knowing, you are already familiar with some of the commonest French tool-words.
A chapter is posted once a week on the site (Not so) Daily French, French vocabulary section of the blog.
More advanced students may find useful to translate the main article of the newsletter, and then check their translation by reading and listening to the bilingual video.
