Stanley Kubrick, though not unique in this respect, is special in that he came from a background of photography in his teens to become a film director in his early 20s. As a result, he was not only a director, but also a cinematographer – frequently frustrating actual cinematographers working under him in that they didn’t get to do any work -, as well as a writer and even an editor. His films are, consequently, truly his: oozing with his unique, confronting style in every possible way. This films are relentlessly satirical, with visuals that are larger than life in a way that is quite different to the high budget Hollywood style of flashiness for the sake of entertainment. Kubrick used bold, almost unnatural colours and framing to provoke the viewer, creating a richly distinctive and evocative experience.
