    Biography. Stanley Kubrick was an American film

    director, writer, producer, andphotographer.

    He was born on July 26, 1928 in

    Manhattan New York.In his earlier years

    he lived in an apartment with his family

    in the Bronx.

    Since an early age he liked jazz, chess andphotography. His father gived him aGraflex camera when he was thirteen,triggering a fascination with stillphotography.

    Kubrick attended William Howard Taft HighSchool from 194145.He was a poor

    student, with a average grades. Hegraduated from high school in 1945.

    When he was 17 years old he began to workfor the magazine Look as a phographer.He gained a lot of prestige. He workedthere for 2 years.

    In 1950 Kubrick made his first short film called"Day of the fight". The second one was filmedone year later and it was called "Flying Padre".The third and last short was named "TheSeafarers".

    Kubrick change the short films with "Fear andDesire" filmed in 1953 . Kubrick and his then-wife, Toba Metz, were the only crew on the film.He didn't liked the result and he decided to

    erased this film of his life; this happened toowith his second film "Killer's Kiss", and for thishe had a reputation of being greedy and ego-maniac in his search for perfecction.

    His next job was called " The Killing" and it wasfilmed in 1956. This film was the first one withand important cast of Hollywood and with a bigbudget. It was based on the novel of LionelWhite. The storyline wasn't in a chronologicalorder, it had a lot of flashbacks and this wasunusual in that time.

    Spartacus (1960) was his next film.This film was very difficult to dobecause of the creative differences

    between Kubrick and Kirk Douglas,the star of the film. Spartacus wasa critical and commercial successand established Kubrick as a majordirector.

    Kubrick's next film Paths of Glory was

    set during World War I.The film

    was not a significant commercial

    success, but it was critically

    acclaimed and widely admired .

    Tired of Hollywood Kubrick moved to England. His firstfilm in there was "Lolita". This film was bases on the

    novel of Vladimir Nabokov. The story is about andaffair between a middle age man and his twelve yearsold stepdaughter. It generate major controversy. Atthe end he had to change somethings because of thecensorship.

    His next project would come from the book" A ClockworkOrange" by Anthony Burgess. Stanley adapted this book intoa screenplay all by himself. The movie was set in the futureand was about how criminals were treated in the future. Itshown some extremely shocking (at that moment) scenes inwhich the main character Alex, played by Malcolm McDowell,committed rapes and brutal crimes. Kubrick use the lasttrends in music, with new equipment and in art andarchitecture with works of modern art and pop art. Althoughthe film was a mediocre success in the US because of howharsh were the scenes, in Europe is one of the best films of all

    times.

    His next film was "The Shining", released in 1980, adaptedfrom the novel of the same name by bestselling horrorwriter Stephen King. The film starred Jack Nicholson and

    Shelley Duval.Stephen King disliked the movie, callingKubrick "a man who thinks too much and feels too little".This film is one of the best horror films according to horrorfans. "Just because you're a perfectionist doesn't meanyou're perfect." is the quote Nicholson used to expressedwhat he thought of Kubrick's working methods.

    His last film was Eyes Wide Shut in 1999,a story of sexual restlessness, starring TomCruise and Nicole Kidman. It shows thesexuals encounters of a couple withstrangers in their imagination or in real life.This film is full of sex, adultery and it's veryconfusing because you never know whenit's reality or dreams. Hindu organizationsconsidered the film offensive, because itfeatures a verse from The Bhagavadgita,one of the most important Hindu scriptures,

    during an orgy scene. Kubrick himselfthought that Eyes Wide Shut was his bestfilm ever.

    In 1999 while filming Eyes Wide Shut,Kubrick died of a heart attack in his sleep.He was 70 years old.

    _ He was married three times, his first wife was Toba Metz; he

    met her when he was working for the magazine Look. His

    second wife was Ruth Sobotka, she was an actress of his filmKiller's Kiss and her third wife was Christiane Harlan and they

    met in the filming of Paths of Glory. They remained together

    until the dead of Kubrick and they had two daughter and she

    had one daughter of another marriage.

    _ Kubrick had a reputation for being tactless and rude to those

    he worked with. Some of Kubrick's collaborators complained thathis personality was cold and that he lacked sympathy for the

    feelings of other people. A lot of people said that he was an

    obsessive of perfecction and exploted his cast doing almost 50

    times one scene.
