What is Jazz Music?

• The origin of the word "jazz" is most often traced back to a vulgar term used for sexual acts.

•  Some of the early sounds of jazz where associated with whore houses and "ladies of ill repute."

•  However, the meaning of jazz soon became a musical art form.

•  It is a combination of improvisation, swing notes, back beats and blues with brass instruments.

•  These ingredients have combined in different ways, with different factors, to make different types of jazz. 

A Brief History of Jazz

• The music that we call jazz was born around the year 1895 in New Orleans.

•  Jazz represented a break from tradition music where a composer wrote an entire piece of music on paper.

•  Jazz, then, functions as popular art and has enjoyed periods of fairly widespread public response.

•  Jazz continued to evolve and developed into many different styles.

Popular Jazz Artists

• He is synonymous with jazz. 

• He grew up in New Orleans where he learned to play cornet in reform school.

•  He played around New Orleans in several bands and joined “King” Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band in Chicago in 1922.

• In 1925 he recorded his famous Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions.

• He is an American musician who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist.

• He owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice.

• His first mainstream vocal hit was his 1943 recording of one of his compositions, "Straighten Up and Fly Right."

Peggy Lee

• She is an American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer, and actress.

• She wrote music for films, acted, and created conceptual record albums—encompassing poetry, jazz, chamber pop, and art songs.

• In 1942 Lee had her first #1 hit, "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place."

Billie Holiday

• She is an American jazz singer and songwriter.

• Nicknamed "Lady Day."• Her vocal style, strongly

inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo.

• Critic John Bush wrote that Holiday "changed the art of American pop vocals forever."
