Fundamentals of an effective Google search
Internet Searching
*First things first
*Choose a Search Engine:
*SERP—the Search Engine Results
Page
*know the parts of the SERP1. Title of the webpage
2. The snippet—the short description of the website3. The URL—the web address of the website4. Cached link—a link to an earlier version of the
webpage
*Search for researchType in search terms or key words, NOT an entire question.
Do not include unimportant words like the, with, a and similar words.
*Example of search questions and Search TermsQuestion: Which countries usually participate in the Winter Olympics?
Search Terms:
Countries
Winter Olympics
Participating
Less is more*1. two or three key words will give you a broader set of results
*2. Don’t add punctuation
*3. Use web friendly words. If you are searching for medical information, use medical words.
*Example: use the word--Headache
*NOT “my head hurts”
*Tips for better Google Searches
*Add Quotation marks
When you need to find the words together, put the phrase in quotes.
Example: “Big Easy”
(searching for the meaning of this nickname for an American city)
*Add the tilde ~If you want to include search terms that mean about the same thing as a certain word, you add the tilde
Example: ~tutorial internet search
(Searching for guides, reference, tutorials on internet searching)
*Leave something out of the search results
When you want to leave out certain results, you can do that by adding the minus sign and then the word to your search.
Example: dolphins -football
(When you want to search for Dolphins, but NOT the football team)
